Women’s Golf in First Place after Two Rounds of CCU Swan Memorial

THORNTON, Colo. – The defending Colorado Christian University Swan Memorial team champions are in strong defense of their title after Monday's first and second rounds.  The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team leads all 19 teams with a 613.  UCCS opened the tournament with a 311 before shaving off nine strokes (302) in the second round.  The Mountain Lions hold a seven-stroke lead over second place Midwestern State University (620).

FROM THE TEE
  • Julia Baroth leads the Mountain Lions and is in second place overall, just two strokes out of first place.  Baroth shot a two-over par 74 in the opening round before squaring off for even par in round two.  She sank four birdies in a span of seven holes in the first round, including three straight on holes No. 8, 9 and 10.  Baroth ranks second overall in par 4 scoring (4.10).
  • Newcomer Jordyn Allen has sole possession of eighth place with a two-round score of 155 (77, 78).  Allen posted three birdies today, two of which came in the second round and final five holes.
  • One stroke behind Allen is Dakotah Kreil who is tied for ninth place with a five-over par 156 (79, 77).  Both of Kreil's birdies came in the second round on holes No. 4 and No. 15.
  • Rounding out the Mountain Lions scoring is Emily Shimkus.  Shimkus carded an 83 in the first round but bounced back to cut off eight strokes in round two.  She dropped four birdies on the front nine in round two to shoot a 33 on the front nine.
  • Just outside of scoring is Rachel Penzenstadler who is sitting in 39th place with a 163 (81, 82).
  • Competing as individuals for UCCS are Olivia Florence (34th place, 162) and Samantha Saile (72nd place, 170).
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Juanita Gomez from Midwestern State University leads all 108 golfers with an even par 144.  Gomez shot a 69 in the opening round before adding six strokes in the second round (75).
  • As a team, UCCS leads the field in par 5 scoring, averaging 5.05, and are second in Par 4 scoring (4.37 average).  The Mountain Lions also lead the tournament with 99 pars, five more than second place CCU.  UCCS is also second overall with 17 birdies, just one behind the tournament leader Regis.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS is the defending champion of the CCU Swan Memorial.  The Mountain Lions won the tournament in 2020, besting Westminster College by four strokes (613-617).  Baroth (148), Shimkus (151) and Kreil (152) finished second, fourth and fifth overall, respectively.

  • The third and final round of the CCU Swan Memorial will begin Tuesday morning.
