Volleyball Claims Two Home Wins; Elder Wins 100th Match at UCCS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team claimed two big wins on their home court for their first home court matches of the season on Friday. Hosting the 2021 UCCS Mountain Lion Classic featuring six teams and 11 matches, the Mountain Lions went the distance in a 3-2 win over Texas A&M International, followed by a 3-1 night cap win against William Jewell College.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS. TAMI
  • UCCS jumped out to a 2-0 set lead against the DustDevils of Texas A&M International (26-24, 25-13) but quickly found themselves heading to a fifth set after the DustDevils won sets three and four (19-25, 18-25). 
  • Trailing 13-12 in the fifth set, Hannah Ammerman knotted the match after putting down a kill from Abbie Boren's assist.  The DustDevils' Ariana Guerra regained the lead, 14-13, for the visitors before Boren connected with Camden Strain for a 14-14 set tie.
  • The Mountain Lions found themselves trailing again to TAMI, 15-14, before Lauryn Shockley put the match in her hands and fired off back-to-back-to-back kills to give UCCS their first home win of the season.
 
STATISTICS vs. TAMI
  • Shockley set a new career high record for most kills in a match after recording 23 Friday afternoon.  She hit an impressive .413 at the net, committing only four errors on 46 attempts.   She also tied for team high honors in digs with Jordyn Kinsey (16 digs). 
  • Hannah Ammerman was one kill shy of matching a career high record in kills.  Ammerman finished the match with 18 kills, three aces and three blocks. 
  • Two more Mountain Lions notched double digit kills as Strain and Julia Geiger registered 12 and 10 kills, respectively. 
  • Making her first career start of the season, Boren tallied 59 of the Mountain Lions 66 set assists.  She chipped in two aces, six digs and two kills.
  • The Mountain Lions finished the match with 72 kills, 57 digs, five blocks and a .288 hitting mark.  TAMI bettered the Mountain Lions at the net with a .319 hitting mark but hit 16 fewer kills (72-56). 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. WJC
  • The Mountain Lions kept the momentum going into the night match, besting the Cardinals in four sets.  WJC took the opening set, 25-22 but the Mountain Lions battled back in set two, 29-27.  Boren fed Shockley for the kill to give UCCS a 28-27 lead before Kinsey served for the set point, forcing the Cardinals to commit an attack error as UCCS tied the match at 1-1.
  • The Mountain Lions rolled past the Cardinals in the final two sets, winning in convincing fashion, 25-12 and 25-15 for their first ever match win over WJC.
 
STATISTICS VS. WJC
  • Four Mountain Lions posted at least 10 kills against WJC, led by Strain's 18 putdowns.  Shockley added 16 kills, followed by Grace Ferguson (12) and Ammerman (10).
  • Boren hit the 50-set assist mark in four sets as she registered 51 for the night.  Shockley and Ammerman also paced the back row with 10 digs each as the Mountain Lions finished with 44 digs as a team.
  • UCCS outhit William Jewell at the net, .419 to .225, and registered 69 kills to WJC's 45.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Head coach Chrissy Elder earned her 100th career win as a head coach of the Mountain Lions Friday afternoon with a 3-2 win over the DustDevils.  In nine seasons, she is 101-111 at UCCS.
 
UP NEXT
  • UCCS will close out the Mountain Lion Classic Saturday night with a matchup against Lubbock Christian University at 7 p.m.
