Offense Erupts as Baseball Wins Two against Cougars

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team notched 29 hits and scored 26 runs in two wins against Colorado Christian University Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Park.  UCCS won the series opener, 17-5, and took game two, 9-1.  The series was scheduled to be played in Lakewood, Colo., but was moved to UCCS due to field conditions.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 1
 
  • The Mountain Lions began the series opener with a blast, scoring fours in each of the first two innings.
  • Jaeden Hegmann started the scoring spree with a double down the left field line to bring in three runs as Jake Anderson, Matt McDermott and Kiichi Sato scored from Hegmann's bat.
  • The next batter, Aaron Faragallah, hit a double through the left side to score Hegmann and give UCCS a 4-0 lead after one inning of action.
  • Evan Richards went yard for the 10th time this season early in the second inning to plate Sato for his second run of the game and give UCCS a 6-0 lead.  With two outs and runners on the corners, Faragalla added another RBI to score Anderson from third base.
  • Ryan Schmidt followed Faragalla at the plate and singled up the middle, plating Hegmann and giving UCCS an 8-0 advantage after two innings. 
  • The Mountain Lions were held in check for the next two innings before adding two more runs to their lead in the fifth inning.  Walker Rumsey hit a sac fly scoring Schmidt before Sato's triple to right center scored Matt Berg.
  • Leading 10-0 after five innings, UCCS erupted for four more runs in the sixth inning and three more in the eighth inning. 
  • The Cougars prevented the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Russell Cruz added three more runs in the final inning on a three-run home run, but the Mountain Lions lead was too large for the Cougars to catch as UCCS won the series opener, 17-5.
 
 
STATS FROM GAME 1
 
  • UCCS posted 18 hits, six of which were extra base hits.  Anderson, Hegmann, Faragalla and Schmidt each notched three hits.
  • Hegmann finished the game going 3-for-4 with four RBI, three runs and one walk. 
  • Anderson registered three hits on five at-bats with three runs scored and two RBI.  Defensively he added nine putouts at first base.
  • Daniel Silva dominated the mound for his fourth win of the season.  Silva held CCU scoreless and only two hits with four strikeouts in the first six innings.
  • Brian Marquez relieved Silva in the seventh inning, fanning four batters and allowing five runs on four hits.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME 2
 
  • UCCS picked up where they left off in game two of the series.  With one out and Sato on second base, McDermott doubled down the left field line to score Sato in the opening inning.  Anderson's first at-bat of the game was a triple down the left field line, bringing in McDermott for a 2-0 lead after one inning. 
  • Anderson's next at-bat came in the third inning when he charted a double to score McDermott for the second time in three innings.
  • The Cougars jumped on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a single home run shot by Jordan Medina.
  • Leading 3-1 heading into the sixth inning, Anderson continued his hot hitting streak with a two-run home run, his 10th of the season.
  • Sato started the seventh and final inning for UCCS with a lead off single.  The ensuing batter, Richards, hit his 11th home run of the season to boost UCCS' lead to 7-1.  McDermott reached base after being hit by a pitch in the back setting up Anderson at the plate.  Anderson, who was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, drilled a double to left field to score McDermott.  Anderson plated his second run of the game when Hegmann brought him home from a single, sealing the win for the Mountain Lions, 9-1.
 
STATS FROM GAME 2
 
  • Anderson went 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored.  All four of his hits were extra base hits (two doubles, triple, home run).
  • McDermott finished with three hits, four runs scored and an RBI, while Sato registered two hits and scored two runs.
  • Christian Manmano posted his first win of the season, working six innings and holding CCU to one run and four hits.

  • Games three and four of the series will be played on Monday, April 19 in Lakewood, Colo., beginning at 11 a.m. from All-Star Park.
