HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • The Mountain Lions finally got their 2021 season going as they took on the MSUB Yellowjackets in their first home series. In game one of this double-header, pitching was the emphasis for both teams as it was a low scoring affair.
  • MSUB drew first blood with a solo home-run in the top of the first inning, but the Yellowjackets would not score again in the game.
  • UCCS answered in the third with an RBI double from Jake Anderson, a fly out in foul territory from Jaeden Hegmann that would score Anderson, and finally a two-run blast from Evan Richards to right field that made the score 4-1 in favor of UCCS.
  • From then on it was the Daniel Silva show as he got the start for UCCS and pitched very well in his first outing of the year. After giving up the initial home run, Silva would end his day going seven complete innings and allowing only one run off five hits with four strikeouts.
  • Jon Sotto came in relief of Silva in the seventh and threw two shutout innings for his first save of the season, which clinched UCCS' first win of the year.
GAME 2
  • Game two was the opposite of game one as it was all offense to start with little resistance from the mound. MSUB jump on the Mountain Lions early, putting up three runs in the first and four in the second off starting pitcher Brian Marquez.
  • However, those would again be the only runs the Yellowjackets would score in the game.
  • Junior Christopher Bryant came in relief of Marquez in the third and went 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball before having to be relieved due to injury.
  • The Mountain Lions came alive offensively in this game as well. After scoring two in the first, UCCS put up six in the third off a passed ball, a RBI double from Michael Bennin that scored two, and a three-run home run from Walker Rumsey which gave the Mountain Lions the lead, 8-7.
  • UCCS would add one in the fourth off an RBI single from Hegmann.
  • Senior Nate Jenkins came in to close the game out in the fifth, and close the game he did, throwing two shutout innings to earn his first save of the season and give UCCS the win, 9-7, and the Friday sweep of MSUB.
