HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • Game one got off to a hot start as MSUB jumped out to an early lead in the third inning off a grand slam from Daniel Cipriano. The Yellowjackets would add three more in the fifth off a double and a single to make the score 7-0 after five.
  • After being no-hit for 4 2/3 innings, the Mountain Lions' bats finally came alive in the sixth thanks to a solo home run from Kiichi Sato, an RBI single from Matt McDermott and a two-run home run from Jake Anderson, making the score 7-4.
  • The comeback was on after the Yellowjackets scored one in the seventh, the Mountain Lions answered with a five-run inning off an RBI single from Walker Rumsey and back-to-back RBI doubles from Matt Berg and McDermott. Throw in a run scored off of a wild pitch and another off a passed ball and UCCS took the lead, 9-8, after seven.
  • MSUB would not yield as they added another in the eighth, but UCCS would answer with two home runs in the inning, a solo shot from Sato, his second, and a two-run blast from McDermott to make the score 12-10 in favor of UCCS.
  • Matt Geoffrion had come in relief of Creede Jeffers, who came in for Jonathan Cowles, in the eighth and earned the win for UCCS, his first as a Mountain Lion.

GAME 2
  • Game two was a back-and-forth affair to start as MSUB again jumped out to an early lead after scoring two in the first. UCCS would answer with two of their own thanks to another two-run blast from Anderson.
  • The story was the same in the second inning as MSUB hit a solo home run to take a 3-2 lead, but Evan Richards would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run shot to give UCCS a 4-3 lead.
  • MSUB kept fighting as they did all series, scoring two in the fourth of a single and a balk by pitcher Jeremy Onken. However, the Mountain Lions would again answer with a solo shot from Aaron Faragallah and two RBI singles from Sato and Luis Samorano, who drove in two RBI with his single to make the score 8-5.
  • The Mountain Lions would add three in the fifth off single from Richards and a two-RBI double from Sato to make the score 11-5.
  • MSUB was forced to leave the game early due to a long return journey to Montana State, making the final score 11-5 after five and one half innings.
