Mountain Lions Improve by 18 Strokes to Finish Sixth at WC Wasatch Invitational

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs golf team shaved 18 strokes from Friday's opening round.  The Mountain Lions carded a 306 in the second round of the Westminster College Wasatch Invitational on Saturday to finish sixth overall with a 630 (324, 306).   UCCS tied for sixth place with MSU Denver.

FROM THE TEE
All four Mountain Lions improved on their score from Friday's first round.  Julia Baroth, who entered the day tied for 25th place after carding an 80 yesterday, improved by six strokes today to finish in a tie for 12th place with a 154.  She tallied 16 pars today to finish the tournament with 26.
 
Baroth was joined by Emily Shimkus in 12th place after Shimkus drained three birdies today to also take six strokes off of yesterday's round.  Shimkus matched Friday's par output with 11 today to close the tournament with a 154 (81, 79).
 
Jordyn Allen hit a birdie on par 4 hole No. 8 and added 11 pars to post a 160 and finish in a tie for 29th.  Allen carded an 81 on Friday before finishing with a 79 today.
 
Closing out the Mountain Lion scoring was Dakotah Kreil's 162 (83, 79).  Kreil, who tied for 35th place, notched 11 pars and sank a birdie on hole No. 3 (par 3).
 
Rachel Penzenstadler added eight pars today and a birdie on par 4 hole No. 10 to close out the tournament with a 166 and finish in 48th place (tie).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
Colorado Christian University won the team title with a 606 to top all 14 teams.  Faith Kilgore and Yuliana Yapur both tied for second place with a 149 to lead the Cougars.  They finished behind the individual leader, Brady Turnquist of Biola who carded a 146.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
The Mountain Lions finished second in Pars after sinking 108.  Baroth's 26 pars were the most by any individual golfer.
 
UCCS hit eight birdies in the tournament, five of which came today.  Shimkus totaled three birdies in the second round and Kreil and Penzenstadler each added one.
 
UP NEXT
The Mountain Lions will head back to Colorado for the Colorado State Pueblo Farmers Insurance Invitational at Pueblo Country Club Oct. 11-12.
