Mountain Lions Finish Second at FLC Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Competing in their last round of the fall season, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team finished just two strokes out of first place Tuesday afternoon at the Fort Lewis College Nick Turner Invitational.  UCCS fired a 300 today to finish with a two-round score of 598 at the Arroyo del Oso Golf Club in Albuquerque, N.M.  Arkansas-Fort Smith finished on top of the 14-team tournament with a 596.

FROM THE TEE
  • Julia Baroth moved up three spots to finish tied for 10th place after carding a 74 today to bring her total to 149 (75, 74).  Baroth drained four birdies today, including on back-to-back holes No. 8 (par 4) and No. 9 (par 3).
  • Dakotah Kreil and Jordyn Allen tied for 13th place overall with a 150.  Kreil buried an eagle on her first hole of the day (hole No. 5, par 5).  On the front nine she totaled two birdies, an eagle and four pars for a 34.  Allen played steady as she hit par on all nine holes on the back nine and birdied hole No. 1 (par 5) for a 73, as she took four strokes off from Monday's round.
  • Completing the Mountain Lions' scorers is Emily Shimkus with a two-day score of 151.  Shimkus opened the tournament with a 72 and carded a 79 in Tuesday's round. 
  • Rachel Penzenstadler improved by three strokes, recording an 85 to finish in a tie for 35th place (157).
  • Representing the Mountain Lions as individual golfers were Olivia Florence, Samantha Saile and Mackenzie Fontana.  Florence tied for the 36th place with a 158 (77, 81) as Saile posted a 163 (79, 84) to finish tied for 52nd place.  Fontana took off 16 strokes from Monday's round to place in a tie for 61st after shooting a 166 (91. 75).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • Arkansas-Fort Smith moved up from second place yesterday to win the tournament.  UAFS posted a 596 behind Monday's round of 29 and today's round of 300.  Midwestern State University's Beatrice Perucchini led all 78 golfers with a two-under par 142 (71, 71).
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • The Mountain Lions led the field in Par 4 scoring (4.17) and tied for first for most birdies (19).  UCCS finished second in Par 3 scoring (3.23) and fourth in pars (107).
  • Kreil was one of three players to card an eagle.
  • Allen tied for the individual lead for most pars (28).

  • UCCS will resume the 2021-22 season next spring.
