Women’s Golf Posts Season Low Round of 298 at Nick Turner Invite

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team is just six strokes out of first place after the opening round of the Fort Lewis College Nick Turner Invitational, held at the Arroyo del Oso Golf Club in Albuquerque, N.M.  UCCS opened their final tournament of the fall season with a season-low 298, six strokes behind tournament leader St. Mary's University's 292.

FROM THE TEE
  • Emily Shimkus opened the tournament with an even par 72 and is tied for fifth place.  Shimkus posted a 36 on each half of the course while hitting 12 pars and sinking three birdies on holes No. 6 (par 4), No. 8 (par 4) and No. 17 (par 4).
  • Two strokes behind Shimkus and tied for 13th place is Dakotah Kreil with a 74.  Kreil made four birdies, including three birdies in a span of seven holes.
  • In a tie for 19th place with a score of 75 is Julia Baroth.  Baroth fired a 35 on the front nine and added 13 pars on the day.
  • On her final hole of the opening round, Jordyn Allen hit a birdie on par 3 hole No. 9.  Allen is tied for 31st place with a 77.
  • Also adding a birdie on her second to last hole is Rachel Penzenstadler, who is currently sitting in a tie for 44th place with an 80.
  • Competing as individuals for the Mountain Lions are Olivia Florence (tied-31st, 77), Samantha Saile (tied-41st, 79) and Mackenzie Fontana (tied-74th, 91).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
  • St. Mary's leads the 14-team tournament with a 292.  SMU teammates Sofia Ruescas and Estelle Beck are tied for first place with a two-under par 70.
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
  • Shimkus and Kreil both hit a birdie on their first hole of the tournament.
  • Shimkus is tied for first in the tournament in Par 4 scoring (3.80) and fourth in birdies (three).
  • Kreil is tied for the lead in Par 3 scoring (2.75) and has four birdies, the third most in the tournament.
  • As a team, UCCS is second in Par 3 scoring (3.35) and Par 4 scoring (4.16), third in birdies (10), and fourth in Par 5 scoring (5.15) and pars (55).
 
UP NEXT
  • The final round of the tournament will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
