Shimkus, Mountain Lions Lead CSUP Farmers Insurance Invitational after Day One

PUEBLO, Colo. – After one round of action on Monday, Emily Shimkus and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team are leading the field at the Colorado State University Pueblo Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational, held at Pueblo Country Club.  The Mountain Lions opened their third tournament of the fall season with 299 to lead all eight teams.

FROM THE TEE
Emily Shimkus is leading all 50 golfers after opening the CSUP Invitational with a 71.  Shimkus shot par or better on 17 of 18 holes, tallying 15 pars and two birdies on holes No. 5 (par 5) and No. 9 (par 4). 
 
Julia Baroth and Rachel Penzenstadler are tied for 10th place with an opening round 75.  Baroth sank four birdies, three of which came on the back nine where she drained a 30-foot putt on hole No. 11.  Penzenstadler added a birdie on par 5 hole No. 12 and chipped in 13 pars.
 
Jordyn Allen, who drove the green on par 4 hole No. 10, is in 18th place with a 78.  Allen hit birdies on hole No. 7 (par 5) and No. 12 (par 5).
 
Just outside of scoring for the Mountain Lions is Dakotah Kreil in 33rd place with an 82.
 
Competing as individuals are Samantha Saile (tied-23rd, 80), Olivia Florence (tied-23rd, 80) and Mackenzie Fontana (49th, 94).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS
UCCS holds a three-stroke lead over second place CSU Pueblo (302) and MSU Denver (302).  Shimkus is the individual leader with a one-stroke lead over second place Thitapha Iamtragul (Dodge City CC) and Winnie Shaw (MSU Denver).
 
BEYOND THE SCORECARD
Shimkus and Baroth are tied for the lead in Par 3 scoring (3.00) while Shimkus is second in Par 4 scoring (4.00).
 
Baroth is tied for the individual lead in birdies after tallying four today.
 
Shimkus leads the field in most pars made (15) while Penzenstadler is second with 13.
 
UP NEXT
The final round of the CSUP Farmers Insurance Invitational will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
