Women’s Golf Opens 2020-21 Season with a Strong Start

THORNTON, Colo.  The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team competed in their first tournament since March 2-3, 2020 after opening the 2020-21 season today at the Colorado Christian University Swan Memorial and are currently in second place after one round of competition.  The Mountain Lions are in second place overall after carding a 306, just five strokes out of second place.

FROM THE TEE
Three Mountain Lions are currently in the top 10 of the Swan Memorial.  Senior Julia Baroth (Denver, Colo.) and freshman Emily Shimkus (Cave Creek, Ariz.) lead the Mountain Lions with a three-over par 75, tying them for fourth place overall. 
 
Baroth opened the tournament with a five-over par (41) on the front nine but bounced back to shoot two-under par on the back nine (34), including two birdies on holes No. 14 and No. 18.
 
Newcomer Shimkus settled in on the back nine of Todd Creek Golf Club.  She capped off her first collegiate round with two birdies on the last two holes to shoot a 36 on the second half.  Shimkus opened the round with one birdie on hole No. 8 as part of a three-over par 39 on the front nine.
 
Junior Dakotah Kreil (Gilbert, Ariz.) finished the round with a four-over par 76 to tie for seventh place.  Kreil tallied three birdies and 10 pars in the season opening round. 
 
Rounding out the top four scorers for UCCS was sophomore Julia Eaton (Fishers, Ind.) who is tied for 15th place with an 80.  Eaton leads the field in par 3 scoring with a -1.
 
Competing as individuals are freshman Samantha Saile (Barrington, Ill.) and sophomore Mackenzie Fontana (Colorado Springs, Colo.).  Saile debuted her collegiate campaign with a first round score of 87 that featured a birdie on par three hole No. 17.   Saile is currently tied for 33rd place and is five strokes ahead of Fontana (tied-49th place).
 
TOURNAMENT LEADERS 
Westminster College leads the nine-team tournament with a 301 (13-over par).  The Mountain Lions, sitting in second place with a 306, hold a three-stroke lead over Colorado Mesa University (309).
 
WC's Cailyn Clayton and CMU's Crystle Querol lead all 63 golfers with a one-over par 73.

The second and final round of the CCU Swan Memorial will begin Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
