PREVIEW | Women's Soccer Heads West to Take on CPP and CSUSB

This Week's Games
  • The #11 University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team will be traveling to California for two non-conference matchups.
  • On Friday, September 13, UCCS will take on California Polytechnic State University, Pomona (CPP) at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
  • On Sunday, September 15, the Mountain Lions face off against California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) at 1:30 p.m. (MT)
Game Coverage Last Time Out
  • The Mountain Lions got off to a great start last weekend as they own a 2-0 record thanks to two wins against Lubbock Christian University and #10 West Texas A&M University.
  • Five different players netted goals last weekend, including three freshmen scoring the first goals of their UCCS careers.
  • On Thursday, UCCS got started quickly with a goal in the second minute, followed by two more in the second half, one of which was a penalty kick.
  • The Mountain Lions totaled 14 for the game and seven on goal.
  • After allowing a late goal off a corner kick, UCCS went on to win by a score of 3-1.
  • On Saturday, UCCS welcomed the #10 Lady Buffs with a shutout performance. The Mountain Lions again got started quickly with an early goal at the 1:09 mark of the game.
  • In the second half it was more of the same as the Mountain Lions had 18 total shots in the game, including seven more on goal.
  •  UCCS scored two more goals in the second half to put the game away 3-0, earning a shutout against their first ranked opponent of the year.
  • Over their first two games, the Mountain Lions scored six goals while allowing only one, had three assists, 14 shots on goal, and six saves.
RMAC Record/Standings
  • In RMAC news, three other teams also started the year 2-0.
  • Colorado Mesa University, Colorado School of Mines and Dixie State University all recorded two wins in their opening weekends.
The Series
  • UCCS has never faced off against either CPP or CSUSB. The Mountain Lions will look to get the series started in the correct way with a pair of wins.
Scouting the Opponent
  • CPP split their first two games of the season for their 1-1 record. The Broncos scored two goals in their first win but were shutout in their second game.
  • CPP totaled two goals on 18 shots (10 on goal) and one assist in their first two games. Their goalkeeper also accumulated eight saves in those games.
  • Individually, senior forwards Amanda Duran and Ambria Pogue own the two goals for CPP and junior midfielder Jessica Llamas owns the team's only assist so far this season.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Williams holds the position in net for the Broncos with her eight saves and 1-1 record.
  • CSUSB has started the 2019 season 0-2 with two tough road losses.
  • The Coyotes have one goal on 14 shots (seven on goal) and one assist in their two games this season. They also have 12 saves on season as they were berated with shots to open the season.
  • Individually, senior forward Kelly Kevershan and junior forward Raelene Diaz have the team's only goal and assist respectively.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Carly Luna has all 12 saves for the Coyotes, along with save percentage of 60 percent and the team's 0-2 record.
Hot Takes
  • UCCS shot up the national rankings this week after a big win over #10 WTAMU. The Mountain Lions now own the #11 spot in the nation.
  • Freshman forward Tanner Sanders led the team with two goals, both of which came against #10 WTAMU. She now leads the Mountain Lions in points with four.
  • Two other freshmen, forwards Gabriella Lancaster and Nicolette Sandoval, also netted their first goals in the black and gold with Lancaster scoring the first goal of the season for UCCS against LCU.
  • Sophomore forward Savannah Mills had her first goal and assist of the season for her three points, which is tied for second on the team. Mills' goal gives her a total of nine for her UCCS career, which is tied for 10th on the UCCS All-Time Leaderboards.
  • Junior midfielder Tarah Patterson had identical stats to Mills over the weekend with one goal and one assist for her three points. Those stats mean Patterson is continuing to climb the UCCS Leaderboards.
  • Patterson now ranks second alone in assists (14), fourth alone in points (52) and fifth alone in goals (19).
  • Freshman goalkeeper Mollee Swift leads the team in saves with four. She and sophomore Alexis Walker also combined for the team's first shutout of the year.
Award Winners
  • In the first week of the season, senior Aleesa Muir was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. This is Muir's second career RMAC Defensive Player of the Week win.
  • Last weekend, Muir helped the Mountain Lion defense stifle the opposition as they allowed only one goal and shutout the #10 team in the nation.

  • The forecast for Pomona, CA on Friday, September 13 shows a high temperature of 98 degrees and a low 67 degrees. Winds are expected to gust up to 13 mile per hour.
  • The forecast for San Bernardino, CA on Sunday, September 15 shows a high of 96 degrees and a low of 61. Winds are expected to gust up to 15 miles per hour.
RMAC Leaders
  • UCCS has six different players in the top-10 of various statistical categories in the RMAC.
  • Shanade Hopcroft ranks third in the RMAC in shots with 10, while Savannah Mills ranks eighth with six.
  • Tanner Sanders is tied for the second most goals in the RMAC with two.
  • Four players rank in the top-10 of points. Sanders is tied for second with four, Tarah Patterson and Mills are both tied for sixth with three, and Nicolette Sandoval is tied for ninth with two.
  • Goalkeeper Mollee Swift ranks in the top-10 in goals against average (.667, third), saves (four, ninth) and saves per game (two, 10th).
UCCS Under Coach Sian Hudson
  • UCCS improves to 35-8-4 under head coach Sian Hudson. Now in her third year as head coach, this 2-0 start is the best start the Mountain Lions have had with Hudson at the helm.
  • With the win over #10 WTAMU, Coach Hudson now holds a 6-6 record against ranked opponents as the head coach of UCCS.
Upcoming Games
  • Next weekend, UCCS will again be traveling for a set of conference road games.
  • On Friday, September 20, the Mountain Lions will take on Colorado State University – Pueblo in Pueblo, Colo. at 7 p.m.
  • On Sunday, September 22, UCCS will be in Santa Fe, N.M. taking on New Mexico Highlands University. The game is scheduled for 11 a.m.
