Volleyball Heads South to Face ThunderWolves, Cowgirls

THIS WEEK
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team (7-10, 5-4 RMAC) heads into RMAC play this week following a home split. They will be on the road against CSU-Pueblo on Friday at 7 p.m., and New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday at 6 p.m.
 
SCOUTING THE THUNDERWOLVES
CSU-Pueblo enters this week on a five-match losing streak and are 4-14 overall (2-7 RMAC). Against Adams State, they were bested in four sets (22-25, 17-25, 25-20, 24-26). Brooke Schilling knocked down a team-high 16 kills for the Pack. Schilling hit .256 for the match and added four digs. Grace Hern earned her fifth double-double of the season. Hern handed out 26 assists in three sets. She also collected 10 digs. Teammate Berkley Hays amassed a match-high five blocks. Hays now has at least two rejections in each of her last six matches. She finished with four kills. Sarah Vang and Grace Miles each collected eight kills. Vang narrowly missed a double-double with 13 digs. She also put down two service aces. Miles swatted her way to four blocks. Page Heller led the ThunderWolves with 16 digs. Mallorie Post added six kills and two blocks.
 
Match two of the weekend ended with a three-set loss to Fort Lewis College (17-25, 23-25, 15-25). Maddy Wisniewski smacked down a career-best eight kills in two sets. Wisniewski also hit .375, the best percentage of Pack outside hitters. Kelsey Bell led the Pack with 17 assists in two assists. Bell collected six digs. She also put down two kills and hit .667. Grace Hern accumulated 10 digs in her only set. Brooke Schilling led the Pack with 10 kills. She also had six digs. Sarah Vang narrowly missed a double-double with eight kills and nine digs. Page Heller led the Pack with 10 digs. Berkley Hays swatted the Pack's only two blocks of the match. Both of her blocks were solo rejections.  She also had five kills
 
SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS
NMHU enters the week on a one-match winning streak (6-11, 4-5 RMAC). Their first match last week was lost in the fifth set. After being down two sets to none they rallied back to force a fifth-and-deciding set against Fort Lewis (26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14). Tiffany Matchett paced the Cowgirls as she finished 27 kills and 20 digs to go along with an ace and three blocks. Cynthia Norris finished with 15 kills while Julie Staffler had 14 kills and a block. Celina Naranjo and Samantha Sjogren had 32 assists apiece with Sjogren adding two aces while Elena Rivera had a team-high 35 digs and two aces.
 
Match two was a second-straight five-setter, but this time at Adams State the Cowgirls came out on top as they won 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 18-16). Cynthia Norris led the way for the Cowgirls with 21 kills and added six blocks while Tiffany Matchett had 20 kills, 17 digs and two blocks, Camryn Nelson had eight kills and 12 digs, Taley Ferrari had six kills and eight blocks, Elena Rivera had a team-high 24 digs and Soleil Gandara had 44 assists.
 
LEADERS IN THE RMAC
Overall there are several Mountain Lions ranked among the top 10 in the RMAC this season. Josie Russell's attack game has been very strong this year with her .320 hitting percentage and 111 kills. Raelynn Edge continues to set up her teammates at a very strong clip, posting 11.04 assists per set, good for second best, as well as 740 assists overall. Alyssa Brinton has 177 kills of her own. Defensively, Lauren Brown's 62 total blocks are fifth best and Jordyn Kinsey is seventh with 4.51 digs per set.   
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Mountain Lions wrapped up last week with a home split. The win over Westminster in four sets (25-9, 25-11, 18-25, 25-20) saw UCCS win their fifth straight match and they never trailed during the first two sets. Sophomore setter Raelynn Edge posted a season high 51 assists. Four Mountain Lions notched at least 10 kills against the Griffins, led by Alyssa Brinton's 15 kills. She added 15 digs and hit .344 from 32 attempts. Taylor Smith chipped in 11 kills and hit .474 while assisting on four blocks. Lauren Brown and Grace Nelson each accounted for 10 kills.  Brown posted six block assists and had one solo block as the Mountain Lions finished with nine team blocks. Edge's 51 assists reached a season high in a four-set match. She helped the Mountain Lions hit .297 as a team, as UCCS notched 60 kills on 138 attempts (19 errors).
 
Dixie State University snapped the Mountain Lions five-match winning streak on Saturday.  The Mountain Lions fell in four sets to the Trailblazers (21-25, 25-19, 17-25, 16-25). The Mountain Lions finished the match hitting at a .082 clip and posting 48 kills. Brinton led both teams with 15 kills. Grace Nelson added 11 kills and hit .161 for the match. Raelynn Edge ran the offense with 43 assists to go with six digs and four kills. Jordyn Kinsey posted a team high 13 digs. Morgan and Smith combined for 21 digs. DSU blocked the Mountain Lions 13 times. 
 
UP NEXT
After two road matches this weekend, UCCS comes back home to play host Regis on Friday, October 12th at 7 p.m., and Colorado Christian University at 5 p.m. that Sunday.
