Alex Darwin improved her own program record for best individual round with a 75 for three strokes over par to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team after the first day of the Western New Mexico Fall Invitational. The Mountain Lions also turned in their best team round in program history with a 311 for 23 over par.
Darwin recorded two birdies in both her opening three holes and closing three holes of today's round. She lowered her score by a stroke from last Tuesday's Colorado Christian Invitational. Darwin is a in a tie for No. 21 among the 84 golfers in the field.
Andrea Ballou improved her season-best by a stroke with a 75 in today's round for 3-over par. She birdie on holes five and seven to finish the front nine at 1-over.
Jamie Zook took three strokes off of her career-best with a 78 for 6-over, and Racquell Castillo rounded out the team score with an 82.
UCCS is in a tie for No. 13 with Montana State-Billings with today's 311. The Mountain Lions lowered their program record for best team round by three strokes from last Tuesday's CCU Invite.
Michelle Romano was forced to take a no card after today's round after a ruling from course officials. She shot a 71 in today's round with an eagle on the final hole, in what would have been the best round in program history.
The Mountain Lions will be back in action for the final round at 8:30 a.m., MDT.
