Mountain Lions Turn in Best Round of Season in First Round of RMAC Championship

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's golf team recorded its best round in program history with a 332 in the first round of the 2014 RMAC Championship today at the Wigwam Golf Resort. Laura Gritz led the individual effort with a 79 for 7-over and was tied for seventh overall.

The Mountain Lions were 44 strokes over par to lower their best score of the season by three strokes. UCCS has recorded its four best rounds of the inaugural season in the last six rounds since the Regis Spring Invitational on April 1.

Gritz shot her third-best round of the season with her 79 (40-39) and was among the tournament leaders on the par 4 holes. She is three strokes out of second place and five strokes behind the leader, Colorado Christian's Maria Manrique.

Jamie Zook recorded a pair of birdies and finished with her best round of the season with an 83 (38-45) today. She was tied for No. 24 overall.

Raquell Castillo and Forre Zook both rounded out the team score with a pair of 85 scores and were tied for No. 29. It was Castillo's best performance of the season in the first round. Amanda Crites finished with an 87 and outside of the team scorecard at 15 over par.

UCCS is eighth in the team standings and is within five strokes of fifth-place Metro State. The Mountain Lions have averaged a 12-stroke improvement from the first to second rounds in the last three tournaments, and will look to start the improvement in the final round of the conference championship at 8:30 a.m., MDT.
