UCCS Begins Postseason at Colorado Mesa

11/11/2014 10:12:00 AM

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team (12-15) will begin its postseason schedule tonight in the RMAC Tournament Quarterfinals against top seed and co-regular season champion Colorado Mesa (24-3) at 7 p.m., in Brownson Arena. It's the first tournament trip for the Mountain Lions since 2012.

UCCS won the last three matches of the regular season to tie for seventh in the conference standings and earned the No. 8 seed after the tiebreaker with Adams State. The squad of 10 true freshman will face the eighth-ranked team in the nation that is 10-0 at home this season.

Kim Catlett posted back-to-back nights of 20 kills in a pair of 3-1 victories against Chadron State and Black Hills State to close out the regular season. She is leading the RMAC with 3.95 kills per set and is fifth in the conference with 0.35 aces per set. The Mavericks will counter with a Tiffany Peterson, a libero who is third in the RMAC with 4.93 digs per set, and with Abby Ney, a right side hitter that is third in the conference with a .361 hitting percentage.

The Mountain Lions and Mavericks will face each other for the first time this season tonight, a by-product of the conference scheduling formula where each team in the conference will play all but one of its conference opponents. Head Coach Chrissy Elder was able to beat the preseason predictions, which put the Mountain Lions in No. 10 in the conference poll, and lead UCCS to the conference postseason in her second season.

UCCS fans on the Western Slope, or who make the trip from the Front Range, will receive free admission courtesy of the Mountain Lion Athletic Department. Fans wearing UCCS gear will be admitted for free, and students can show their UCCS ID card for admission. Fans can also follow the game with live stats from Colorado Mesa and with live video streaming through America One Sports, but be aware that season passes for video streaming expire at the end of the regular season.
