The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Mountain Lions defeated the No. 11-ranked Metro State Roadrunners 3-2 in overtime Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium.
Landon Brunk scored his first goal of the season which was also the game-deciding goal.
"We've been dealing with adversity all year long and battling, but it just hasn't fallen our way" said UCCS coach Henry Ellis. Today we were able to rise to the occasion."
Carlos Mendez scored the first goal for the Roadrunners and the only goal of the half in the 32nd minute of play. He dribbled up the left side of field and hit the ball into the far right corner of the net.
Mike Mason had the first goal for the Mountain Lions off of a cross from
Kyle Lee during the 48th minute of the game.
Soon after, in the 71st minute,
Brett Drefs took a direct kick for the Mountain Lions from the top of the box and scored into the far corner.
In the 87th minute of the game the Roadrunners were awarded a penalty kick and Steven Emory put the ball into the back of the net.
Brunk scored the game winning goal in the 94th minute of overtime off an assist from Drefs. Drefs took the direct kick and crossed it to find the head of Brunk.
"I've said all year that our team is really really good, we've just been really unlucky," said Ellis. "Today it fell for us."
Mountain Lions improved to 3-10-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain lions hit the road to take on the Mesa State Mavericks Friday October 27th in Grand Junction.
