COLORADO SPRINGS - A record University of Colorado at Colorado Springs crowd of 878 saw the Mountain Lions make Friday night very uncomfortable for No. 15 Rockhurst before the Hawks finally managed a 1-0 win at Mountain Lion Stadium.

The match was preceded by "The March," during which well over 400 UCCS students gathered at the campus' housing village and then marched en masse down Austin Bluffs Parkway and up North Nevada Ave. to Mountain Lion Stadium. Once there, other students and fans joined the marchers for a tailgate party. The gathering marched into the stadium as a unit 15 minutes prior to kickoff, quickly filling the stands and much of the adjoining grass berm.

The throng nearly doubled UCCS' previous record for attendance at a soccer match. The previous record was 445 against Fort Lewis on Oct. 26, 2002.

The crowd was rewarded as the home team played its nationally-ranked opponent to a standstill through the first 52 minutes. And even when UCCS finally broke, it was in a flukish way.

In the 53rd minute, Walter Moskop sent a ball from 40 yards out and near the sideline toward the far post of the UCCS goal. Keeper Adam Liszewski retreated but the shot, which may just have well been a pass, floated beyond his outstretched hand and into the upper corner.

The Mountain Lions, who were outshot 13-10 for the match, tried to mount an attack but were denied the equalizer by a tough, physical Hawks defense.

The match was the season opener for both teams.

Liszewski made three saves in the losing effort, while Kyle Clawson made two saves to record the shutout victory.
