COLORADO SPRINGS -
Matt Friesen scored two goals, both assisted by
Mike Mason, as the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs snapped its three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars Friday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.
"We just knew we had to be patient, and our time was going to come," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis about busting the losing streak.
With the win, UCCS improved to 4-6-1, 2-4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Christian fell to 2-10-1, 0-7 in the RMAC.
UCCS threatened often in the first half, notching several near misses. Shots by Friesen and Mason went off the crossbar and another by Friesen required a brilliant save by Colorado Christian goalkeeper Jared Jacobs. On one other occasion, Jacobs was barely able to punch away a ball that had bounced over him.
Those close calls proved to be a measuring up process as UCCS finally put one in at the 39:25 mark. Mason sent a crossing pass from the left wing toward Friesen, who was shielded from the goal by a Cougar defender. Friesen tip[ed the pass behind the defender and cut hard left to gain himself just enough room to launch a left-footed shot from 12 yards out. The ball sailed into the upper left corner.
"
Matt Friesen always does a good job for us,†said Ellis. He was able to get a couple for us today, which was good for us. He just worked all day today.
"He's just got that hungry attitude, he never switches off. He's just got that 'I want to be first attitude.' When he has success on the field, we have success on the field."
Just over five minutes later, a crossing pass from
Aaron Brandt missed Friesen, who was making a run straight toward the goal.
Donny Stone, who was making a far-post run, tracked down the rolling ball and, instead of gathering it or passing it backward to the midfielders coming up in support, pivoted hard and launched a shot from an extreme angle. The ball rolled through the narrow window and into the goal.
Friesen and Mason connected again at the 69-minute mark. Mason's crossing pass found the foot of Friesen, who knocked it in bottom right.
The Mountain Lions outshot Colorado Christian 26-8.
Adam Liszewski made two saves to record his second shutout of the season. Jacobs made nine save in the losing effort for the Cougars.
