DURANGO, Colo. - The truth about David and Goliath stories is that Goliath rarely loses.

Sunday at Dirks Field, David had the sling but no stone as the underdog University of Colorado at Colorado Springs menâ€TMs soccer team was beaten 7-1 by the powerful Fort Lewis Skyhawks. Each of the seven goals was scored by a different player.

Just how big was the giant facing the Mountain Lions on Sunday? The Fort Lewis leviathan came into the match underrated at No. 9 nationally and is now 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Most impressively, the Skyhawks have outscored their opponents 49-5, including an 8-0 thrashing of the same Mesa State squad that beat UCCS in overtime just two days ago.

"They're always a strong team - very disciplined," said UCCS coach Henry Ellis about Fort Lewis. "That's really the key to any team; just be disciplined on all sides of the ball."

The Mountain Lions did make one mark Sunday, becoming the first RMAC team to score a goal against Fort Lewis this season. Before Sunday, the Skyhawks had outscored RMAC opponents 24-0.

That goal came in the 38th minute with UCCS already trailing 4-0. Jaron Stewart sent a free kick from just inside midfield to the center of the penalty area. Garrett Maloney went high to head the ball and punched it over the outstretched hand of Fort Lewis goalkeeper Zane Wells.

"They've scored a lot of goals off of set pieces," said Ellis. "They've got some guys who can serve fantastic balls into the mix. They're making those hard runs and jumping up and getting on the end of them and putting them into the back of the net."

Those words proved prophetic. Each of the Skyhawks' first four goals came directly off of or immediately following corner kicks.

On the first, the corner kick was played in short, where Dimo Kyrmanidis served in a low pass that was one-timed by Keane Hamilton. The ball deflected off a sliding UCCS defender but had enough force to continue on into the goal.

The second came directly from the corner kick. Tom Settle served up a pass to the near post, where UCCS goalkeeper Adam Liszewski went to meet it. While Liszewski got caught up in traffic, Jamie Cunningham managed to get a head on the ball and deflect it into the goal.

Shortly afterward, a corner kick was played backward to Kyrmanidis, who one-timed a shot, while falling down, that sizzled into the upper left corner.

Fort Lewis made it 4-0 on yet another corner kick. It came in low and was played back to the top of the eight-yard box where Kyle Wood hit a solid shot that was blocked. Thomas Hoang was there to punch in the rebound.

Euan Purcell scored the Skyhawks' fifth goal on a lob shot in the 76th minute. The assist went to Joe Barnd. Less than two minutes later, Abdel Becerra scored on a crossing pass by Sam Morris.

Barnd completed the scoring by converting a penalty kick with 6:34 remaining.

With the loss, the Mountain Lions' third straight, UCCS dropped to 3-6-1, 1-4-1 in the RMAC. The team next plays on Friday against Colorado Christian at Mountain Lion Stadium.

Goliath, thankfully, isn't sceduled to be there.
