LAKEWOOD - Freshman
Matt Friesen had a hat trick and added two assists to lead the University of Colorado of Colorado Springs to a 7-0 win over the Colorado Christian Cougars Friday afternoon.
Friesen's three goals and two assists gave him eight points in soccer's statistical system, tying the UCCS school record for points in a game. Kevin Noleen also had eight points against Concordia College on Oct. 22, 1999.
Friesen also recorded just the eight hat trick in UCCS soccer history.
The last time the Mountain Lions scored seven goals in a game was 10 years ago, against St. Gregory's on Sept. 6, 1998.
Friesen started his career-high day early in the first half with a pass by
Donny Stone to score the first UCCS goal three minutes, 38 seconds into the game.
Less than six minutes later,
Ryan Buttner got an assist with a crossing pass to
Greg Miley who scored the second goal for the Mountain Lions.
Friesen was at it again 46 seconds later, when
Jeff Bettner sent him a pass that led to his second goal of the day.
Midway through the first half Friesen got his first assist of the day with a pass to Stone, who broke away and put UCCS a head 4-0 going into halftime.
Sean Miller (1-2) started the first half and three saves for the Mountain Lions to notch his first career win. Russ Dornisch (0-5) got the loss for Colorado Christian with one save.
Friesen scored his final goal of the game from a crossing pass by
Mike Mason with 31:43 remaining in the game.
Less than four minutes later, after a turnover by the Cougars, Bettner scored the sixth goal for UCCS 27:50 remaining in the game.
Six minutes, 30 seconds later, Friesen got his final assist of the game with a pass to Dami Oladiran who chipped it over Colorado Christianâ€TMs goalie to end the game 7-0.
Adam Liszewski started the second half and got one save for the Mountain Lions, while Alex Ambrose had five saves in the second half for the Cougars.
With the win, UCCS ended its four-game losing streak and moved to 5-11-2, 3-9-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Colorado Christian dropped to 0-19, 0-13 RMAC.
