Regis tops UCCS in foul-marred match

An old saying reminds that all good things must come to an end. Mercifully, so do bad things. Or, more accurately, ugly things.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' 3-1 soccer loss to the Regis Rangers is a case in point. At 3:00 p.m. MST Sunday at Sand Creek Stadium, a very ugly match came to an end.

It was a contest marked by ugly passing, which led to ugly turnovers, which led to ugly goals. It was also marked by ugly behavior, as witnessed by seven yellow cards and three red cards.

Jose Rosales scored two goals for Regis, which improved to 8-8, 5-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The first came in the sixth minute when two Mountain Lions defenders fell down in front of the goal while trying to deflect a crossing pass. The ball deflected to Matt Westerlund, who nudged it over to a wide-open Rosales.

Rosales' second goal came at the 50:54 mark. A bad pass in the CU-Colorado Springs midfield gave Regis a breakaway down the right side. Lucas Grein's centering pass found Rosales, who was trailing the play.

CU-Colorado Springs (3-11, 1-9 RMAC) closed the deficit just 26 seconds later. Ryan Beebe send a through ball forward that was tracked down in stride by Brandon Best. Best's shot from 18 yards beat Regis goalkeeper Trevor Steege.

The Rangers scored the clincher in the 65th minute. A poor pass out of the Mountain Lions defensive zone was intercepted by Mike Smith, who blasted a shot past CU-Colorado Springs goalkeeper James Bjorklund.

Things got chippy after the final goal, with six of the yellow cards and all three red cards coming in the final 26 minutes.
