HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions immediately started on the attack as they kicked off against CCU and earned their first corner kick just five minutes after the starting whistle blew. Choosing to play it short, Kamryn Albeso collected the ball and slotted a cross right on top of the 6, connecting with Malia Groshong who unfortunately sailed her shot above the crossbar.
- Moments later, UCCS notched their first goal after a string of possession in the midfield area. Taylynn Levi found Elise Broberg wide on the right side of the field, who went on to blast a low cross into the box. The Cougars were forced into a single-goal deficit as Elise Broberg's cross bounced off a defender and into their own goal.
- CCU found their first attacking opportunity with 14 minutes on the clock. The ball was lobbed over UCCS' back line and connected with Kayla Truong, who decided to log an early shot from way downtown. Her shot ricochetted off the left goalpost, and the match continued on with the Mountain Lions in a 1-0 lead.
- UCCS experienced a similar situation 15 minutes later, as another cross from Elise Broberg connected with Charlize Ellsworth for an unlucky shot that hit the left goalpost. However, Ellsworth had another scoring opportunity moments before halftime as she deceived two Cougar defenders with a cut towards her right foot and buried a shot into the top right corner of the goal. The Mountain Lions headed into halftime with a 2-0 lead over CCU.
- The Cougars returned to the field with some newfound momentum and closed the gap to a single goal. After a corner kick for UCCS was cleared out of Cougar defensive territory, Alexis Byrd transitioned down the field on a 50-yard sprint and defeated a Mountain Lion player one-on-one to then smash shot past Lucy Kapranos' fingertips.
- UCCS responded with their third goal of the night as Ellsworth slipped a pass to wide-open Abby Stassi just a few yards in front of the net. The senior forward showed discipline, slotting a one-touch shot into the lower left corner of the goal and ultimately securing a 3-1 victory over CCU.
