Mountain Lions Dominate Westminster 3-0

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team swept Westminster 3-0 inside the Gallogly Events Center on Friday night, earning their second conference victory of the season.

All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to an all-time record of 13-2 when battling against the Griffins, and extend their winning streak to three consecutive games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountain Lions put a quick two points on the scoreboard, but WU was quick to comeback with kills from Kyra Mahler and Elsa Gilmore to keep the score close. The next few minutes resulted in back-and-forth action, with neither team earning more than two consecutive points until the Griffins found themselves in a 12-11 lead after a 3-0 scoring run. Their lead was short-lived, as Payton Tompkins, Karlee Pinell, Sydni Lafasciano, and Nicole Himebauch logged kill after kill in a long stretch of momentum. UCCS swiftly put WU away in the first set, recording a 25-19 victory.
Two attack errors forced the Mountain Lions to trail early, but they quickly responded with a 4-0 scoring run to get back on top. A service ace by Ava Livolsi brought the score to 4-4, but another 4-0 run earned UCCS a comfortable lead. The Griffins remained in a deficit until a 4-0 run of their own tied the score 17-17. However, kills from Sydney Hyde, Himebuach, and Tompkins earned the Mountain Lions a 25-22 win in the second set.
WU scored on four of the first five serves, immediately putting UCCS behind. A slew of attack errors and two kills from Hyde energized the Mountain Lions, and they quickly worked their way back up to an 11-8 lead. UCCS went on two 3-0 scoring runs moments later, forcing the Griffins to trail 17-11. After some back and forth action, WU found their groove and went on a 5-0 scoring run of their own. However, it was not enough to overcome the deficit and the Mountain Lions earned their second conference victory with a 25-21 third set win, sweeping the Griffins 3-0.

MATCH STATISTICS

The Mountain Lions led in points (75-62), kills (44-28), total attacks (125-113), hitting percentage (.232-.044), assists (39-28), block assists (14-10), and total blocks (7.0-5.0). However, the Griffins led in digs (55-53).
Payton Tompkins led UCCS in kills, totalling 15 for the night. Sydney Hyde chipped in eight kills while Nicole Himebach logged seven.
Aubrey Miller recorded 24 assists against WU while Charlette Albers and Addison Humphrey each logged six.
Two Mountain Lions collected service aces: Himebuach and Tompkins.
Alysse Marcoso led UCCS in digs, logging a total of 17 while Tompkins chipped in 11.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Payton Tompkins currently ranks No. 3 in the RMAC in kills, logging an average of 3.43.
Tonight's victory marked the third consecutive game UCCS has swept the Griffins 3-0.
