Mountain Lions Win 3-2 in Five Set Thriller Against Colorado Mesa

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team earned a 3-2 victory against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks at home for the first time since 2012.

  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to an all-time record of 10-39 with this afternoon's victory against the Mavericks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions were put on their heels as Colorado Mesa quickly put two points on the scoreboard, but an impressive kill by Payton Tompkins kept the gap in points close. The next few minutes resulted in back-and-forth action, until a 3-0 scoring run earned UCCS their first lead of the match. Ensuing kills from Sydnee Walker, Aubrey Miller, Sydney Hyde, and Tompkins kept the Mountain Lions in the lead and forced the Mavericks to call a timeout to reorganize. Their efforts fell short though, as UCCS continued to dominate the rest of the set and claimed a 25-20 victory. 
  • A service ace by Ashlyn Tafoya kicked off an impressive 7-0 scoring run for CMU. A kill from Tompkins put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard, but the Mavericks responded with two more points of their own. The remainder of the second set resulted in attack after attack for CMU. Despite a valiant effort from UCCS, the Mavericks earned their first set win of the match, 25-10. 
  • A slew of substitutions entered the match on both sides, and it was CMU that earned the first point of the third set. However, the Mountain Lions answered by scoring on six of the next seven serves, forcing the Mavericks to trail 6-2. A 4-0 scoring run from CMU closed the gap in points, but two kills by and a service ace by Nicole Himebauch kept UCCS on top. After more back-and-forth action on the court, the Mavericks found their groove and pushed the Mountain Lions behind 19-15. Kills by Ashlyn Persha, Sydney Amiatu, and Henley Madsen sealed a 25-20 victory for CMU in the third set. 
  • The beginning of the fourth set was an intense battle, with both teams staying within one point of each other until UCCS finally managed to gain a 13-7 lead over the Mavericks with a 5-0 scoring run. Kills by Walker, Karlee Pinell, Tompkins, and Himebauch kept CMU in a deficit for the remainder of the fourth set and the Mountain Lions were able to extend the match to five sets with a 25-19 victory. 
  • UCCS started off strong with a 3-0 scoring run, but the Mavericks were able to respond with a 3-0 run of their own. Both teams collected kills over the next few minutes, but CMU found themselves trailing 10-7 after the Mountain Lions gained a wave of momentum. However, the Mavericks managed to find some momentum of their own, and went on a 3-0 scoring run to tie up the match 10-10. Both teams battled to a 13-13 draw, and an unfortunate attacking error earned CMU a one-point lead. A stunning kill from Tompkins tied the score yet again, and a kill from Himebauch on the following serve combined with a service ace by Tompkins sealed a 3-2 victory for the Mountain Lions.

  • Payton Tompkins recorded a season high record against the Mavericks with 21 total kills. 
  • Aubrey Miller logged a season high record with nine digs in today's match.

  • The Mountain Lions will travel to Denver, Colo. to compete against Regis at 7 p.m. on September 25 before coming back home to take on Colorado State Pueblo at 3 p.m. on September 26 inside the Gallogly Events Center.
