UCCS Drops Match Against #19 MSU Denver, 3-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team faced a difficult 3-1 loss on their home court against T No. 19 MSU Denver.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountain Lions started on their heels as MSUD went on a 3-0 scoring run. Hyde was the first to put a point on the scoreboard for UCCS with an impressive kill, but the Roadrunners went on another 4-0 run to put the Mountain Lions in a crushing 7-1 deficit. Despite remarkable aces by Aubrey Miller and Sydni Lafasciano combined with a slew of kills from UCCS, the Mountain Lions could not overcome the early gap in points MSUD created, and ultimately fell 23-25 in the first set.
Alysse Marcoso served first, collecting two points for UCCS and closing a previous 3-0 trail to 3-2. A kill from Sydnee Walker and attacking errors from the Roadrunners led to a four-point lead for the Mountain Lions. After calling a timeout to regroup, MSUD earned a quick two points, but were cut short Hyde demonstrated a perfect block to earn UCCS their 10th point of the set. The Mountain Lions found themselves with a 15-10 lead, but two flawless blocks from the Roadrunners killed UCCS' momentum. However, after back and forth action over the next few minutes, three aces from Walker sealed a 25-14 victory for the Mountain Lions in the second set.
Payton Tompkins blocked MSUD's first kill attempt, putting UCCS on the scoreboard first. The Roadrunners responded with a 4-0 scoring run, cut short by a 3-0 Mountain Lion run. Momentum swung from team to team as UCCS and MSUD each scored five points over the next four minutes, until the Mountain Lions found themselves in an 11-16 deficit. A combination of attack errors and a kill from Nicole Himebauch closed the Roadrunner's lead to two points, until MSUD found their groove again and were the first to reach 20 points. A swift 5-0 scoring run earned the Roadrunners a 25-17 win in the third set.
MSUD picked up where they left off and immediately put three points on the scoreboard. An ace from Addison Humphrey and a kill by Tompkins closed the gap in points, but the Roadrunners were able to manage a 5-2 lead over UCCS. Moments later, the Mountain Lions went on a 5-0 scoring run, earning their first lead of the fourth set. The Roadrunners answered with a 4-0 run of their own, forcing UCCS to trail 9-7. Two kills by Hyde tied up the match, kickstarting back-and-forth play with neither team scoring more than two consecutive points over the next few minutes. Finally, the Mountain Lions settled into a more comfortable four-point lead as Tompkins, Himebauch, and Walker each collected kills. However, MSUD found a way to comeback, tying the score up 24-24.

MATCH STATISTICS

The Roadrunners led UCCS in points (91-90), kills (52-31), total attacks (134-111), hitting percentage (.157-.072), assists (46-28), and digs (52-43). However, the Mountain Lions led in service aces (8-6) and total blocks (9.0-8.0), while both teams recorded 14 block assists.
Nicole Himebauch, Sydnee Walker, and Sydney Hyde each logged seven kills against MSUD, while Payton Tompkins followed closely behind with a total of six.
Aubrey Miller led the Mountain Lions with 12 assists, while Charlette Albers also reached double digits with 11.
Five Mountain Lions recorded at least one service ace: Walker (4), Marcoso (1), Sydni Lafasciano (1), Tompkins (1), and Miller (1).
Marcoso collected 13 total digs for the night, while Tompkins logged a total of 11. Michelle Fredrick led UCCS with five block assists, with Himebauch and Hyde each recording three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Sydnee Walker collected a season-high tonight, logging four service aces.
The Mountain Lions recorded eight service aces against the Roadrunners, their second-highest total of the season, trailing only the nine aces they recorded against Rockhurst.
