HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
- The first three innings of Saturday's doubleheader opener remained scoreless, as the Mountain Lions put plenty of runners on base but couldn't bring any home, while UCCS starting pitcher Janessa Giugliano retired the first nine batters she faced.
- After the Mountain Lions stranded yet another runner on base in the top of the fourth inning, the Rangers finally cracked Giugliano with one out in the home half of the frame as Jane Quinn and Isabella Porter registered the first hits of the game with back-to-back doubles that gave Regis a 1-0 advantage.
- The Rangers' lead did not last long as Jennavieve Goldsworth led off the top of the fifth inning with an infield single to shortstop and immediately came around to score on a game-tying triple to left field by Alyssa Gutierrez. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Katie Steinmetz cashed in the go-ahead run with a fly ball to centerfield that was ultimately dropped by the Regis outfielder, allowing Gutierrez to easily cross home plate for the 2-1 lead.
- With a one-run lead now in hand, UCCS head coach Dwight Sanders handed the ball to his ace inside the circle to start the bottom of the fifth inning, and that decision paid off as Autumn Kunze went on to fire three hitless innings to close out her fourth save of the season and a 2-1 victory for the Mountain Lions.
STATS FROM THE GAME | GAME ONE
- The Mountain Lions notched 11 hits in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, including a 3-for-4 line from Goldsworth and two hits apiece from Gutierrez and Laynee Case.
- In addition to her two hits, Gutierrez added her team-leading sixth triple of the season and an RBI.
- Steinmetz drove in her 23rd run of the season with her go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
- Giugliano (3-2) put together a strong outing as the Mountain Lions' starter in the circle as she picked up her third win of the season while allowing just one earned run across 4.0 innings pitched. The freshman hurler surrendered just two hits during her outing while walking nobody.
- Kunze secured her fourth save of the season with a dominant showing to finish the game in which she retired each of the nine hitters she faced while striking out four hitters.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
- After a pitcher's duel in the opener, the Mountain Lions matched their offensive output from game one in the first inning of the second game as Gianna Pancost kept the inning alive with a two-out single before Katie Steinmetz followed with a two-run homer to give UCCS an early 2-0 lead.
- The Rangers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first inning against UCCS starting pitcher Kailey Bond as they strung together three straight one-out singles to cut the Mountain Lions' lead to 2-1. Regis threatened for more damage in the inning as a walk loaded the bases, but Bond managed to induce a 1-2-3 double play to bring the inning to an abrupt end.
- In the top of the second inning, UCCS delivered a quick answer with Halley Redd drawing a leadoff walk and immediately being brought home to score on a two-run home run by Case that pushed the Mountain Lions' lead to 4-1. UCCS added another run in the frame as a pair of walks put a runner in scoring position for Steinmetz, who lined a two-out, RBI single to center field to give the Mountain Lions a four-run cushion.
- Regis began to chip away at their deficit in the bottom of the third inning as a walk, a single, and an error led to a pair of unearned runs for the Rangers and cut the UCCS advantage to 5-3. The Rangers put together another rally in the bottom of the fourth inning as they quickly got runners to second and third base on a double by Adisyn Rademacher and a bunt single by Olivia Wick before scoring their fourth run of the game on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt from Quinn. With the lead being whittled down to just one run, Sanders once again made the decision to turn the ball over to Kunze on the rubber and she delivered for a second straight game as she got a strikeout and fly out to end the inning with the lead still intact.
- The Mountain Lions added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-4, but it proved to be unnecessary as Kunze shut down the Rangers over the final three innings to seal the four-game series sweep.
STATS FROM THE GAME | GAME TWO
- UCCS notched nine hits in the final game of the series with eight of them coming from four players who each notched two-hit performances, including Pancost, Steinmetz, McCombs, and Case.
- Case and Steinmetz each hit their seventh home run of the season, pulling even with Pancost in a three-way tie for the team lead.
- Bond drew the start for UCCS in the series-finale and pitched 3.1 innings while allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout.
- Kunze (12-5) tossed the final 3.2 innings of the ballgame and collected her 12th win of the season as she held the Rangers off the scoreboard while allowing just three hits and striking out three batters.
