Mountain Lions Drop First Two Games to Yellow Jackets

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs softball team fell 3-7 in its first game and 5-7 in the second in Saturday's double header against Black Hills State University.

HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME ONE
  • Starting pitcher Autumn Kunze ran into some trouble in the top of the first, allowing one run on one hit and an error before escaping a bases loaded jam with a 0-1 deficit. The Mountain Lions would surrender another two runs in the second to enter the bottom half down by three.
  • The Mountain Lions plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Laynee Case doubled to center as a speedy Tayler McCombs scored from first. The Yellow Jackets would soon score two more on a home run to left field to take a four-run lead.
  • The UCCS lineup did not score in the third inning, and BHSU threatened to extend its lead once again in the top of the fourth. Janessa Giugliano would come out to pitch in relief with the bases loaded and one out. Striking out her first batter faced and retiring the next on a flyout to left field, Giugliano and the Mountain Lions escaped more trouble to hold the score at 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Mountain Lions would move within two in the bottom of the fourth inning after a two-run drive over the center field fence by Case to score Halley Redd. After a scoreless fifth, the Yellow Jackets added two more to their lead in the top of the sixth to go up 7-3. The score would not change for the remainder of the game as BHSU claimed a 7-3 victory.
STATS FROM GAME ONE
  • The Mountain Lions recorded three runs and four hits in the first game of Saturday's double header while drawing three walks and striking out five times.
  • Case provided a spark in the lineup as she posted a 2-for-3 batting line with three RBIs and scored one run.
  • Three of the Mountain Lions' starters recorded a hit on Saturday morning, as Case led the team with two.
  • Kunze drew the start for UCCS inside the circle and tossed 3.1 innings while allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits and four walks. Janessa Giugliano pitched 3.2 innings in relief and surrendered two runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED | GAME TWO
  • After starting pitcher Kailey Bond threw a scoreless first inning, Jennavieve Goldsworth led off the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle. Goldsworth soon reached third and was batted in by Gianna Pancost on a groundout to shortstop to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets led off the second inning with a solo shot to left center field to tie the game up at one apiece. The Mountain Lions bounced back again in the bottom of the second as they scored three more runs to retake the lead.
  • Catcher Katie Steinmetz extended the lead in the bottom of the third with a lead off home run to center as the Mountain Lions went up 5-1. The next two innings would go scoreless before BHSU tied the game up at five apiece in the top of the sixth.
  • With no score in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Yellow Jackets went on to take a two-run lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Mountain Lions would not plate a run in the seventh as BHSU took game two 7-5.
STATS FROM GAME TWO
  • Goldsworth and Redd were the leaders for the Mountain Lions with two hits, as the team finished with eight total.
  • Four different Mountain Lions notched an RBI in the second game of Saturday's double header as Goldsworth led the team with two.
  • Bond (7-6) started the game inside the circle for the Mountain Lions and pitched six innings and allowed seven runs (five earned).
  • Charlee Hoover pitched one inning in relief and allowed no hits, no runs, and one strikeout.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Case matched her season high in RBIs in the first game of Saturday's double header with three.
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will finish four game series against Black Hills State University tomorrow, Sunday, April 19th. The first game is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and the second is at 1:00 p.m.
