Volleyball Takes Down Yellow Jackets in Three Sets

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team defeated Black Hills State 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18) Saturday afternoon in Spearfish, S.D.  UCCS hit .276 for the match and held BHSU to a .133 hitting percentage.

  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions improve to 16-3 all-time against the Yellow Jackets, and 7-2 against BHSU in Spearfish.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Black Hills State opened with a 6-1 lead before UCCS tied the set at 8-8. The Mountain Lions took the lead at 13-12 and extended it to 17-13.  UCCS closed the set with eight of the final 11 points to win 25-18. Payton Tompkins recorded seven kills in the set, while Nicole Himebauch added three kills. Sydney Hyde had a kill and two service aces.
  • UCCS took an early 6-1 lead and led 9-2 following a Tompkins service ace. Black Hills State cut the deficit to two at 14-12, but the Mountain Lions regained control and led 20-18.  UCCS scored five of the final seven points to take the set 25-20. Hyde recorded four kills, while Sydnee Walker had three kills without an error. Tompkins added a service ace and two kills.
  • Black Hills State led 2-0 before UCCS moved ahead 9-8. Tompkins recorded two service aces during a 5-4 stretch that put the Mountain Lions ahead 7-5.  With the score tied 9-9, UCCS scored four straight points to take a 13-9 lead. Hyde then served four consecutive aces as the Mountain Lions extended the lead to 16-10.   UCCS maintained the lead through the remainder of the set. Lafasciano recorded a kill at 23-18 before Tompkins finished the match with a kill at 25-18.   
 
MATCH STATISTICS
  • Payton Tompkins led all UCCS attackers with 13 kills on 36 attempts and finished with a .222 hitting percentage. She also tallied three service aces and finished with 17.5 points, the highest total for either team.
  • Sydney Hyde added six kills while hitting .385 and was a major factor from the service line, including a four-ace run in the third set. She finished with 14.5 points and seven digs.
  • Sydnee Walker was highly efficient offensively, putting down six kills on nine attacks without an error for a .667 hitting percentage. She also contributed two blocks and helped UCCS maintain its momentum during the second and third sets.
  • Nicole Himebauch recorded five kills and was involved in two blocks.
  • Sydni Lafasciano and Karlee Pinell each added four kills.
  • Defensively, Alysse Marcoso led the Mountain Lions with 11 digs, while Tori Greeney added 11 digs.
  • Charlette Albers and Aubrey Miller directed the UCCS offense with 13 and 12 assists, respectively.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • One day after serving a season high 10 aces at South Dakota Mines in a four-set win, the Mountain Lions notched a new season high 11 aces this afternoon.
  • Hyde accounted for six of the 11 aces as she claimed new career highs in aces and digs (seven).
  • The Mountain Lions improve to 4-2 in three-set matches.
  • UCCS has won the last six matches against BHSU.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions return home to play host to Regis University on Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.  The first 150 fans to the match will receive a free White Out t-shirt.
