UCCS Opens Homestand with Draw Against South Dakota Mines

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team drew 2-2 with South Dakota School of Mines Sunday afternoon as they continue to search for their first RMAC victory.

INSIDE THE MATCH-UP
Final: UCCS 2, SDM 2
Records: #14 UCCS (5-1-5, 0-1-2 RMAC), SDM (5-2-3, 1-1-1 RMAC)
Facility: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
All-Time Series: With today's draw the Mountain Lions maintain a commanding lead on the all-time series with South Dakota Mines holding a 13-0-1 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • South Dakota Mines scored first in the 17th minute after UCCS goalkeeper Hugo Sjöberg could not control an initial save, allowing Lucas Miranda to tap the ball in and give the Hardrockers a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mountain Lions responded quickly in the 18th minute as Cole Wearner threaded the ball through a group of South Dakota Mines defenders to Eduardo Macias, who was able to bury it past the Hardrockers' goalkeeper and knotted the game at one apiece.
  • UCCS threatened in the 54th minute as Sean Belzer had an open shooting lane and drove a low shot across the ground that was saved at the last second by a diving Claudio Otto.
  • The Mountain Lions grabbed the lead in the 63rd minute as Moses Kamara sent the ball downfield, finding Yohann Fila in stride who took the ball to the top left corner of the box and launched it past a diving Otto into the top right corner of the net.
  • South Dakota Mines tied the game once again in the 75th minute after Nickolas North rebounded his own shot and sent the second past the Mountain Lions backup goalkeeper, Charlie Lewis.
  • The Mountain Lions got a flurry of shot opportunities in the final two minutes, but nothing dangerous materialized resulting in a 2-2 final score.
STATS FROM THE GAME
  • Yohann Fila's 63rd minute goal was his sixth of the season, and his 14th point. Fila leads the Mountain Lions in both stats so far this season.
  • After subbing for Sjöberg in the 21st minute, Lewis allowed one goal while making three saves in 69 total minutes.
  • UCCS lead the match in total shots (20-11), shots on goal (7-6), and corners (12-0).
  • Miranda's 17th minute goal for South Dakota Mines was his team-leading seventh of the season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • With today's draw the Mountain Lions remain unbeaten against South Dakota Mines in 14 all-time matches.
  • Charlie Lewis' one goal allowed was a new career best, as he surrendered two against MSU Denver on Sept. 17 in his collegiate debut.
  • Today's 20 shots marks the fourth time this year the Mountain Lions have reached at least 20 in a game.
UP NEXT
  • The Mountain Lions will continue their three-game homestand this Sunday, Oct. 4 as they host No. 24 Regis University. The ranked matchup is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. inside Mountain Lion Stadium.
