HOW IT HAPPENED VS. MILLERSVILLE
· The Mountain Lions found themselves in an early deficit (3-6) in the first set on Friday morning before three straight kills by
Sydney Hyde,
Sydnee Walker, and
Rylee Pitts, respectively, knotted up the score at six apiece. The Marauders would continue to hang around until UCCS eventually took a 15-14 lead and pulled away on a 10-4 run to take the first set 25-18.
· Much like the first set, both teams battled early in the second, reaching a tied score of 5-5. Millersville would continue to threaten, but never took another lead in the second set, allowing the Mountain Lions to pull away with a 25-18 second set victory that featured five kills from sophomore
Payton Tompkins and five assists each from
Maylen Mitrovich and
Audrey Dowd.
· The Marauders recorded their largest lead of the morning when they took five of the first six points in the third set in a strong attempt to keep the match alive. UCCS would tie the set at 14-14 on a kill from Hyde and use that momentum to finish on an 11-3 run to sweep their first match of the Mountain Lion Classic.
MATCH STATISTICS VS. MILLERSVILLE
· Walker led all attackers in the match with 13 kills, as Tompkins was the only other Mountain Lion to finish in double digits with 11 of her own.
· Dowd led in assists, notching 21 total, as Mitrovich tallied the second most with 19.
· UCCS libero
Mackenzie Ransom led all players in digs, as she collected 18 of the Mountain Lions' 44.
· The Mountain Lions led the game in kills (49 to 27), assists (46 to 26), digs (44 to 39), and hitting percentage (.309 to .141).
HOW IT HAPPENED VS. WESTERN NEW MEXICO
· The Mountain Lions began Friday night's matchup on a 6-1 run and did not let up, increasing their lead to as high as 12 in route to a 25-14 first set victory. The defense was flying all over the court as UCCS totaled 20 digs to hold the lead. Eight different Mountain Lions tallied a kill in set one, as
Maylen Mitrovich and
Payton Tompkins led the team with three apiece in the team's commanding win.
· The Mustangs took an early 2-0 lead in set two before a kill from
Nicole Martin sparked a 7-0 UCCS run to force a WNMU timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Mustangs would eventually take an 11-10 lead but gave it back to the Mountain Lions before taking their second timeout of the set with the score at 15-12 in favor of UCCS. After the second timeout, WNMU continued to hang around, bringing their deficit to as low as two before a final kill by Mitrovich won the second set 25-22.
· A kill from Martin and two from Tompkins started the scoring in the third set as UCCS took a quick 5-1 lead before forcing another timeout. Coming out of the timeout, UCCS would end the match on a 20-9 run to take the third and final set 25-10.
MATCH STATISTICS VS. WESTERN NEW MEXICO
· Tompkins led all attackers with nine kills. The Mountain Lions spread the scoring around, as they finished with five players that had more than five kills.
·
Audrey Dowd led the Mountain Lions with 23 assists, as Mitrovich was second with 11.
· UCCS led the match in hitting percentage (.329 to .138), kills (42 to 28), assists (40 to 26), digs (37 to 20), and service aces (7 to 2).
· Martin led UCCS with five service aces, as Tompkins tallied the other two for the team.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
· The Mountain Lions begin the season 6-0, tallying five sweeps in the process.
· UCCS has now held all six of their opponents to under a .300 hitting percentage to start the season.
· The 2025 season is the first time the Mountain Lions have started a season 6-0 since 2001, where they won eight straight to start.
