COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team secured a spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament after defeating Colorado School of Mines 75-59. INSIDE THE MATCHUP
  • Final: UCCS 75, CSM 59
  • Records: UCCS (16-10, 12-7 RMAC) | CSM (12-15, 10-9 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: UCCS has improved to a 25-22 record over the Orediggers since 1990.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Orediggers got off to a 9-3 start in Thursday night's contest as the Mountain Lions opened slowly. CSM's defense was undisciplined in the first quarter, resulting in UCCS finding opportunities at the free throw line. The Mountain Lions closed the final six minutes and 55 seconds on a 16-12 run with 11 points coming from the charity stripe. Still, the Mountain Lions remained down two going into the second quarter (21-19). UCCS shot only four field goal attempts in the first quarter but shot 12-of-15 from the free throw line.
  • The Mountain Lions got hot in the second quarter, with Amyah Moore Allen scoring their first 15 points in the frame in a near-seven-minute stretch to give UCCS a 34-27 lead. The Orediggers closed the first half strong, but the Mountain Lions would carry a four-point lead into the half (38-34). Moore Allen notched 14 of UCCS' 19 points in the second quarter.
  • CSM responded strongly from the break and took a three-point lead (47-44) after a 13-6 stretch. UCCS' defense shut down the Orediggers in the final three and a half minutes of the third quarter, allowing only one point while the Mountain Lions tallied 10. UCCS would enter the fourth quarter with a 54-48-point lead.
  • Moore Allen sparked the Mountain Lions to a 9-2 run in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, scoring six points and giving UCCS a 13-point advantage (63-50). At the 4:39 mark in the final frame, Moore Allen cut through the lane for a tough bucket to tie her previous career-high mark of 35 points, helping her team pull away. She followed this by scoring another five straight points to give herself 40 points and UCCS an 18-point lead (72-54) with 2:22 to go in the contest. Ellie Reynolds put the finishing touches on the victory with a three-pointer at the top of the key, giving the Mountain Lions a 75-59 win and an opportunity to play in the RMAC tournament.
GAME STATISTICS
  • Amyah Moore Allen could not be stopped tonight, shooting 76.2 percent (16-21) from the field and 8-of-12 from the free throw line to notch a new program-high 40 points for the UCCS women's basketball program. Along with her 40 points, Moore Allen grabbed four rebounds, tallied one assists, and a steal and a block each.
  • Maison White grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with three points.
  • Five separate Mountain Lions nailed a three-pointer: Ellie Reynolds, Gia Bradley, Breelyn Robinson, Krystina Hagood, and Emily Vidal.
  • UCCS shot an efficient 53.2 percent (25-47) from the field while holding CSM to shooting just 41.4 percent (24-58). The Mountain Lions also garnered a better three-point percentage (45.5 percent-28 percent) and free throw percentage (74.1 percent-25 percent) than the Orediggers tonight.
  • UCCS outrebounded CSM 36-30 and scored more points in the paint (36-34).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Along with her career-high and program-high 40 points, Moore Allen notched a season team-high in field goals made (16). Her 16 field goals also mark the junior's new career high.
  • Moore Allen has scored 498 points this season, which ranks as the third most points scored in a season by a junior in program history and the sixth most scored in a season by any Mountain Lion.
  • This season, Moore Allen averages 19.2 points per game while shooting 48.8 percent from the field.
  • CSM shot just 4-of-16 from the free throw line tonight. That 25 percent shooting from the line is the worst an opponent has shot from the free throw line against UCCS this season.
