Mountain Lions Outlast Cougars in 72-66 Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team battled to a 72-66 win over Colorado Christian University behind Maison White's 27 points and 14 rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Saturday afternoon's game started as a back-and-forth affair, with CCU leading 16-14 in eight minutes of play. The Mountain Lions closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run thanks to a pair of layups from Amaya Snowden and Maison White to lead 19-16. UCCS' bench was heavily involved in the opening frame, scoring 10 of the Mountain Lion's 19 points.
  • The Cougars briefly snatched the lead (25-24) at the 7:12 mark in the second quarter. Still, UCCS quickly responded with a seven-point surge, taking back control. With less than a minute left in the first half, Breelyn Robinson nailed a three-pointer on the left wing and helped the Mountain Lions carry a 40-33-point lead into the half. UCCS shot it well in the first half, going 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from the field and 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
  • The Mountain Lions came out firing in the second half, igniting a 16-2 run fueled by Amyah Moore Allen's six points and White's five, breaking the game wide open with a 56-35 run. However, CCU closed the quarter strong on a 10-4 run. Still, UCCS entered the fourth quarter with a 15-point lead (60-45).
  • The Cougars applied pressure to open the fourth quarter, opening on a 9-2 run and decreasing their deficit to eight (62-54). CCU hit a three-pointer to lessen their lead to six (67-61) at the 1:59 mark, but Moore Allen quickly followed with a layup. The Cougars closed their gap to four (70-66) with a three-pointer with 14 seconds left. Robinson got fouled immediately after the UCCS inbound pass and nailed both free throws. The Mountain Lions drew a CCU offensive foul and sealed the game, winning 72-66.
GAME STATISTICS 
  • Maison White had a monster performance on Saturday, going for 27 points, 14 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive glass while shooting 9-of-12 from the field. White also effectively got to the free throw line, shooting 9-of-15 from the charity stripe.
  • White led the Mountain Lions in a few key areas in the win, helping UCCS outrebound the Cougars 37-34 and 17-11 on the offensive end. The advantage of creating second chance opportunities turned into 21 points, while the Cougars' only scored 11 second-chance points.
  • Amyah Moore Allen helped carry the scoring load for the Mountain Lions as the team's second-leading scorer with 14 points while shooting 46.2 percent (6-13) from the field. Moore Allen also recorded three rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Gia Bradley had a productive showing as well, scoring nine points, collecting a steal, and hitting two three-pointers.
  • UCCS bested CCU in assists (11-10), bench points (14-11), points in the paint (40-36), and blocks (2-0). The Mountain Lions also forced more turnovers than they threw away (15-13).  
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
  • White's 27 points are a new season high, while her nine free throws made and 15 free throws attempted are career highs for the senior.
  • Breelyn Robinson's five free throws made today mark a new career high.
UP NEXT 
  • The Mountain Lions will next travel to Alamosa, Colo., on Thursday, February 2, to take on Adams State University. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at ASU Plachy Hall.
