DURANGO, Colo. – In a much-needed win to secure a spot in the top four of the postseason tournament, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team rallied past a feisty Fort Lewis College squad Saturday evening in Durango, 3-2. The win improves UCCS to 22-2 on the season and marks their 10
th straight win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UCCS snagged a 3-1 lead in the opening set with the first three points for the Mountain Lions coming from Fort Lewis errors. The Skyhawks knotted the set at 3-3, which started off a ping-pong match between the two teams as the score was tied nine times with two lead changes before UCCS took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. A Nicole Martin kill and two FLC attack errors gave UCCS a 16-13 advantage before Maylen Mitrovich connected with Sydney Hyde for a kill, giving UCCS another three-point lead, 20-17. The momentum changed for the Mountain Lions as they committed three straight errors to tie the match at 20-20. The home team came out at the end of set one, outscoring the Mountain Lions 5-2 to take set one, 25-20.
- The action in the second set continued to be a tight battle between the Mountain Lions and Skyhawks. Payton Tompkins broke a 4-4 tie with a kill before Kinley Gomez delivered back-to-back kills to give UCCS a three-point cushion, 8-5. Fort Lewis was able to regain the lead 13-11, but the Mountain Lions answered as Hyde owned a 5-2 run with three of her own kills, putting the black and gold back in front, 16-15. After the 10th tie of the set, the Mountain Lions constructed another 5-2 run as three players put down four kills. Facing set point three different times, the Mountain Lions evened the match at 1-1 when the Skyhawks served a long ball out of bounds, giving UCCS the win, 25-23.
- In the early action of set three, the Mountain Lions found themselves trailing FLC, 5-3, but the deficit didn't last long. Fueled by two aces from Payton Tompkins and a block from Walker and Hyde, the Mountain Lions went on a 6-1 run to give UCCS the 9-6 advantage. A 4-0 run by the Skyhawks put UCCS in another two-point hole, 13-11, and again the Mountain Lions came back. After the third media timeout of the evening, Hyde put down two kills as Gomez added another one as part of a 4-0 run, giving UCCS an 18-15 lead. Holding onto a 23-21 lead, Hyde knocked down a kill for a UCCS set, and finished off the set when she teamed up with Walker to block FLC and win set four, 25-23.
- For the second time this weekend, UCCS went to extra points, but this time fell in the overtime action, 26-24. The set featured eight ties and five lead changes before the 15-point media timeout, but UCCS used a 5-2 run into the timeout to swing the action in their favor, 15-13. The Mountain Lions had a 22-20 lead heading into the final stretch, but Fort Lewis used two kills from Alina Nunez, an ace, and a UCCS service error to help them outscore the black and gold, 6-2, and take set four, 26-24.
- UCCS never trailed in the fifth set and held the upper hand for most of the set. Tompkins notched one of her five kills in the set to put UCCS ahead on the scoreboard, 10-6. Gomez kept the momentum going as her second kill of the set gave UCCS match point, 14-10, before she sealed the match with her game-winning kill, giving the visitors the 15-11 set win and 3-2 match win.
MATCH STATISTICS
- Three Mountain Lions put down double-digit kills with Tompkins registering a team high 20 kills and a solid .262 hitting mark. She also accounted for two of UCCS' three aces and dug up 18 attacks.
- Hyde finished the night with 14 kills, five block assists, and two solo blocks.
- Mitrovich chipped in 32 assists, 23 digs, and three kills while blocking two attacks.
- Gomez' 24 digs led the Mountain Lions, and she also tallied 12 kills.
- UCCS recorded 68 kills, nine blocks, 109 digs, and three aces.
- FLC was paced by Alina Nunez' match-high 21 kills and .340 attack percentage.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Mountain Lions' 22 wins tie the second-best record in program history when UCCS went 22-9 in 2001.
- UCCS improves to 5-1 in five-set matches, and 9-4 when a set goes to extra points.
- In tonight's five-set match, UCCS set new season highs in total attempts (215) and digs (109). Individually, Tompkins set a new season and career high in attempts (61), while Gomez set a new career and season high in digs (24).
- Mitrovich's 32 assists are a new season high for a five-set match, and her 23 digs are a new career high. Hyde also set a new personal record with 33 total attacks.
UP NEXT
- UCCS will close out the regular season at home Nov. 14-15. The Mountain Lions will host New Mexico Highlands University on Friday at 6 p.m., before Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Adams State University.
