Mountain Lions Fall in Three Sets to MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team drops its second match of the season in a sweep to No. 12 Metropolitan State University of Denver.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
  •  Final Score: L, 0-3 (18-25, 20-25, 28-30,)
  •  Records: UCCS (12-2, 4-1 RMAC) | MSUD (11-3, 3-1 RMAC)
  •  Facility | Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  •  All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to 6-49 all-time against the Roadrunners after Tuesday's match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions found themselves down 5-3 early in the first set, as MSUD outside hitter Annika Helf tallied four kills in the process. UCCS would score the next four points with kills from Sydney Hyde, Michelle Fredrick, and Sydnee Walker to retake the lead, and the back-and-forth battle would continue. UCCS eventually took a 13-12 lead before the Roadrunners went on a three-point run to go up by two before the first media timeout of the match. Coming out of the timeout, the Mountain Lions took three of the next four points to tie the set back up at 16 apiece, but MSUD quickly responded with a 9-2 run to take the first set by a score of 25-18.
  • The second set began much like the first, as neither team fell by more than two through the first 14 points. Hyde notched three early kills in the process as the score was tied 7-7. UCCS would then go on a 4-2 run, capped by a service ace from Nicole Martin, before forcing the Roadrunners to call their first timeout of the match. MSUD came back yet again, as they soon knotted up the score at 12 apiece. From there, there would be five more tied scores before the Roadrunners took a 20-19 lead and ran away with set two to win 25-20.
  • Three early kills by Payton Tompkins helped the Mountain Lions take a 7-5 lead in the beginning of the third set as they looked to avoid a sweep. With the score eventually landing at 11-11, UCCS took back the lead with three straight kills with one coming from Walker, and two from Tompkins. Just as the Mountain Lions seemed to gain momentum, the Roadrunners scored four straight points of their own to take their first lead of the third set before the media timeout. MSUD would then take a 23-19 lead before UCCS scored four straight points, all on errors, to tie the set back up. The score would move to 25-25 thanks to another kill by Tompkins, and the fourth kill of the set by Kinley Gomez, but neither team would let up. With the set eventually tied at 28 apiece, the Roadrunners would score two in a row to sweep the match.
