HOW IT HAPPENED
- UCCS dominated the first set of Saturday's match against Regis, posting a .682 hitting percentage with 17 kills. Seven different Mountain Lions recorded a kill in the first set, and only one tallied an attack error. The Rangers hung around for the first seven points of the set, but a kill by Sydney Hyde propelled UCCS into a 21-6 run as they went up 1-0 in the match.
- The Mountain Lions got off to a rocky start at the beginning of set two, as they recorded three service errors and two attack errors throughout the first 13 points to fall to an early 6-7 deficit. The team eventually cleaned up the errors a bit, only tallying five for the rest of the set, but Regis continued to play hard enough to find themselves within one towards the end of the set to bring the score to 23-22 in favor of UCCS. The Mountain Lions would pull away with a narrow 25-23 second set victory capped off by a Payton Tompkins kill.
- In an attempt to avoid a sweep, the Rangers came out flying on defense in the third set, notching 21 digs, holding the Mountain Lions to a .175 hitting percentage. On top of that, UCCS ended the third set with five attack errors, a set error, and a service error, as Regis forced a fourth set in a 25-22 victory.
- UCCS played with the same sense of urgency in the fourth set that they did in the first, notching four early kills and a service ace from Tompkins to establish a quick 7-2 lead. The Mountain Lions refused to extend the match into a fifth set, recording 14 more kills, with five coming from Nicole Martin and four from Hyde. By the time Regis found their rhythm on offense, the lead was too great as UCCS cruised to a 25-13 victory to win the match 3-1.
