HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early in the opening set, setter Audrey Dowd connected with Payton Tompkins for a kill that tied the set at 3-3.  Tompkins' kill ignited a 5-0 spree that featured a solo block from Sydney Hyde immediately followed by Hyde and Tompkins joining together on another block to help UCCS take a 7-3 lead.  Owning a comfortable six-point advantage later in the action, Michelle Frederick notched two kills to extend the Mountain Lions' lead to 21-12.  Chadron State started to make a late rally, outscoring UCCS 4-2 to nudge their way closer to the Mountain Lions, 24-19, but a service error by the home team ended the set in favor of the black and gold, 25-19.
  • The Mountain Lions were challenged by the Eagles the entire second set.  CSC's Kally Kirkwood put her team on the scoreboard first with a kill as two errors from the Mountain Lions put them in an early deficit, 4-1.  Kills from Hyde and Tompkins and an ace from Maylen Mitrovich knotted the set at four-all.  Down 5-7, UCCS went on a 4-1 run that featured three kills from three different Mountain Lions, but it was Nicole Martin's kill that gave the Mountain Lions their first lead of the set, 9-8.  UCCS was constantly straining to catch the Eagles the entire set. Down 21-17, Rylee Pitts and Sydnee Walker threw down kills while an ace from Dowd brought UCCS back within one point of the Eagles, 21-20.  Martin added another kill, but it was matched by Jillian Donovan on the other side of the net to put UCCS back in a two-point deficit, 23-21, before Fredrick and Tompkins each chipped in a kill to knot the set at 23-23.  After UCCS called their second timeout of the set, CSC committed a service error that was followed by a Mitrovich-to-Tompkins connection and a 25-24 UCCS lead, forcing the Eagles to burn a timeout.  Serving set point after the timeout, Pitts knew the assignment and put down a kill from Mitrovich's assist, sealing the win, 26-24.
  • UCCS sprang to an early 8-1 lead in the third set, as Pitts notched three straight kills while Hyde and Tompkins each added two.  Several rallies later during a four-point span, Pitts assisted on a block and added a kill to grow the Mountain Lions' lead to eight, 11-3.  The Eagles refused to fold and went on a 5-0 run that saw two aces and two attacking errors by the visiting team to bring them within two of UCCS, 17-15.  Following a timeout, the Mountain Lions were able to put a little distance between them and CSC, 21-15, after a 4-0 run that ended with Hyde and Pitts teaming up to block an attack.  Grasping to a 23-22 lead, Martin put the match away with a kill and then a solo block for the final two points of the set, sealing the win for the Mountain Lions, 25-22.
