Mountain Lions Spread the Ball Around in Sweep Over Black Hills State

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team swept its ninth opponent of the season in 3-0 victory over Black Hills State University on Saturday evening.

  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions move to 15-3 all-time against the Yellow Jackets after Saturday's match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions opened Saturday evening's match with an 11-2 run before the Yellow Jackets began to climb back and bring the score to 18-12. UCCS tallied eight attack errors and four service errors in the first set, which allowed BHSU to hang around. An attack error late in the set moved the score to 24-22 in favor of the Mountain Lions before a kill from Nicole Martin finished it as UCCS went up 1-0 in the match.
  • UCCS held firm control of the second set for its entirety, as the team posted a .519 hitting percentage and notched 15 kills with only one attack error. With a firm 12-4 lead, the Mountain Lions would go on a 13-9 run as Sydney Hyde's four kills led them to a 25-13 second set victory.
  • The third set did not start the Mountain Lions' way, as the Yellow Jackets jumped ahead to an early 8-4 lead. UCCS would eventually tie the score at 17 apiece as BHSU committed four attack errors in the process, while Hyde racked up three more kills as the team climbed back. The Mountain Lions would then end the set on an 8-1 run in which Payton Tompkins had three kills to go along with three more Yellow Jacket attack errors.
MATCH STATISTICS
  •  The team leaders for UCCS in kills were Tompkins and Hyde, as they both finished with nine. Seven other players had kills as well for the Mountain Lions.
  • Maylen Mitrovich and Mackenzie Ransom were the team leaders with eight digs.
  • Mitrovich led the team with 14 assists, as Audrey Dowd tallied 13 of her own.
  •  UCCS led the match in kills (40 to 25), assists (35 to 23), digs (39 to 37), service aces (7 to 4), and hitting percentage (.289 to .000).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The Mountain Lions claimed their fifth victory in a row over the Yellow Jackets, with their last loss coming on October 5, 2019.
  • The Yellow Jackets' .000 hitting percentage was the second lowest the Mountain Lions have held a team to in the 2025 campaign, as well as the third time an opponent has been held under .100.
  • The Mountain Lions have now swept nine opponents this season, and are 9-1 in three-set matches.

  • The Mountain Lions will head to Regis Fieldhouse in Denver, Colo. to take on Regis University on Friday, October 17. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
