HOW IT HAPPENED
- Amyah Moore Allen came out firing in the opening stanza, accounting for 13 of UCCS' 20 points after making all five field goals and both free throw attempts. After a quick score from CCU's Dasiya Jones, Moore Allen hit two free throws before a turnover by CCU in the backcourt led to a bucket from Maison White. Jenna Kendal drained a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 15-7 lead, but Moore Allen answered with her own trey on the next possession. A jumper by Moore Allen at the free throw line was followed by a driving layup and then a steal from Moore Allen who went coast-to-coast to knot the game at 18-18 before Amaya Snowden closed the quarter with a jumper for a 20-18 UCCS lead.
- Both teams continued to trade leads in the second stanza as the home team netted the first five points to retake the lead, 23-20. Gia Bradley's first points of the game came from long range to put UCCS back on top, 24-23. White's second bucket of the night knotted the game at 26-26 and sparked a 10-2 run by UCCS that featured five points from White, giving the Mountain Lions their largest lead of the half, 34-28. UCCS went into halftime with a three-point lead, 34-31. The black and gold shot a solid 52.2 percent from the floor (12-of-23) and made 7-of-9 free throws to overcome an 18-7 rebounding disadvantage.
- An early CCU 6-0 run to start the second half gave the Cougars the 37-35 lead, but Emily Vidal responded with a huge three-pointer – her first of the game – putting UCCS back on top, 38-37. Moore Allen tied the game for the eighth time of the night, 40-40, after making a layup and followed the hoop with a free throw to complete the three-point play (41-40 UCCS). The Cougars converted four straight free throws to put UCCS down, 44-41, but a key three-pointer from Breelyn Robinson in the left corner knotted the game at 44-44, before Vidal's second three of the night put UCCS back in charge, 47-44, with 3:30 left in the third quarter. CCU made a push late in the quarter, using a 12-3 run to take a six-point lead, 56-50. Ottmann had the last say of the quarter as she drove the lane and put in the layup and the and-one free throw, cutting CCU's lead down to three after three quarters, 56-53.
- The Mountain Lions and Cougars combined for just 21 points in the final quarter as the home team outscored UCCS, 15-6. White and Snowden hit back-to-back layups in the first two minutes of action, but the Mountain Lions were scoreless for nearly eight minutes before Robinson's layup with 34 ticks left in regulation broke the scoring drought as UCCS lost their third straight game at CCU, 71-59.
