HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountain Lions came out sluggish in Saturday afternoon's game, with the ThunderWolves playing physically on both sides of the ball. After a 14-4 start from CSU Pueblo, UCCS found its stride, with Amyah Moore Allen leading the Mountain Lions to a 7-0 run. The ThunderWolves lured UCCS into committing fouls early, as UCCS racked up eight personal fouls in the first quarter. CSU Pueblo's defense caused chaos for the Mountain Lions' backcourt in the opening frame, forcing nine UCCS turnovers to guide them to a 23-14 lead.
  • Moore Allen carried her stellar play from the first quarter into the second, starting the frame with a jumper. The ThunderWolves responded with a three and increased their lead to 10 (28-18) with 5:51 to go in the first half. UCCS responded immediately, exploding to a 10-0 run with knock-down free throw shooting from Maison White, Breelyn Robinson, and Krystina Hagood and some crafty layups from Moore Allen. CSU Pueblo built a five-point lead (34-29), but UCCS responded with a 9-2 run to take their lead of the game (38-36). The ThunderWolves closed the first half strong, though, leading 42-38 at the half. Moore Allen put on a show in the opening two quarters, putting up 21 points and keeping the Mountain Lions afloat.
  • CSU Pueblo started the second half by pushing their lead to seven (49-42) with 6:17 left in the third quarter. A jumper from Rylie Ottmann, free throws from Hagood, and a three-pointer from Robinson helped UCCS trim their deficit to just two (56-54) with 44 seconds remaining in the period. The ThunderWolves remained persistent, finishing the quarter with a 5-0 run to lead 61-54 heading into the final frame.
  • The opening five minutes of the fourth quarter saw CSU Pueblo in complete control on both ends of the floor, going on an 11-2 run. Late in the fourth quarter, Moore Allen scored her 30th point of the game, sparking a 10-2 run for UCCS. Despite the late rally, the ThunderWolves held their ground, and the Mountain Lions fell 74-66.
