SPEARFISH, S.D. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs volleyball team began conference play against Black Hills State University Friday afternoon, starting their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule with a win in four sets. The win gives UCCS a 6-3 record after starting the season 5-3 in non-conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Friday's match against the Yellow Jackets began with BHSU climbing out to an early 15-10 advantage and in control. Coming out of a timeout, the Mountain Lions evened the score at 19 after kills from Payton Tompkins and Avery Ahlers and service aces from Audrey Dowd. UCCS grabbed the lead at 22-21 after a kill from Sydnee Walker but surrendered the last four points to the Yellow Jackets, dropping set one 25-22.
- After giving up the first two points of the second set, UCCS would go on a 9-3 run to enjoy a 9-5 lead early. BHSU fought back, keeping themselves within reach, but the Mountain Lions were able to maintain their lead. A Rylee Pitts kill would give UCCS a 17-13 advantage, leading to the Yellow Jackets taking a timeout to regroup. The timeout resulted in BHSU going on a 4-0 swing, turning up the pressure on the visiting squad. Kills from Maylen Mitrovich and Tompkins pushed the Mountain Lions back up four (22-18). An Emily Pruitt kill gave UCCS a 23-20 lead with two points to go for the set two win. BHSU rallied back and scored the next four points unanswered from the Mountain Lions, taking a 24-23 lead. Not discouraged from losing the late lead, Walker scored the next point with a kill, tying it up at 24. An attack error and a service ace from Mackenzie Ransom resulted in UCCS winning set two, 26-24. Both teams collected 14 kills in set two, but the Mountain Lions saw a hitting percentage of .367 compared to the Yellow Jackets .290.
- Set three was a closely contested set from the start. The two teams tied and shared the lead, but neither could pull away. Kills from Pruitt and Ahlers gave UCCS a 14-11 lead, but BHSU captured the following four points (15-14) all on attack errors from the Mountain Lions. UCCS responded swiftly with a 7-3 run to go up 21-17 and eventually carry their lead to 23-19. The Yellowjackets came within one point (23-22), but the Mountain Lions closed set three with a Tompkins kill, winning 25-22 and going up 2-1 in the match.
- The Mountain Lions and Yellow Jackets traded leads back and forth to start the fourth set, but down two (14-12), UCCS would score the next five points with kills from Walker and Pruitt and a service ace from Mitrovich. With the set notched up late at 19, the Mountain Lions pulled away on a 6-2 run, winning the set 25-21 and the match in four sets. UCCS took advantage of BHSU's mistakes, as the Yellow Jackets committed four service errors compared to the Mountain Lions' who committed one.
MATCH STATISTICS
- The Mountain Lions were led by Tompkins' 14 kills and her 15 points in total. She added seven digs, one assist, and a hitting percentage of .227.
- Walker finished with 12 kills, 19 digs, and one block, while Pruitt added 11 kills, one and a half blocks, and 12.5 points.
- As a team, UCCS collected 56 kills, hit .229, dug up 74 attacks, and assisted 47 times.
- Leading the way in assists was Dowd, who tallied 26, and Mitrovich, who contributed 16.
- The Yellow Jackets put down 56 kills for a hit percentage of .260 while out-blocking UCCS 11-5.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- UCCS is now 3-1 on the season in four-set matches.
- The Mountain Lions have won their last four meetings against the Yellow Jackets.
- UCCS' 56 kills tied the most in four sets this season when they notched 56 against Fort Hays State University on September 6. The Mountain Lion's 74 digs today mark the most they've recorded in a four-set match this year.
