Iverson's Cycle Highlights Baseball's Opening Day Doubleheader Sweep of UMC

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team bounces back to sweep the University of Minnesota-Crookston in Thursday's doubleheader.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP – GAME 1
  • Final Score: UCCS 15, UMC 12
  • Records: UCCS (1-3, 0-0 RMAC) | UMC (0-1, 0-0 NSIC)
  • Facility | Location: Mountain Lion Park| Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: The Mountain Lions are 1-0 all-time vs the Golden Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Golden Eagles would get started right away when Ben Goelz hit one over the right field wall in the season opening at bat for UMC. The visitors would add two more runs, one on a Teddy Giefer double and one on a Sawyer Satrom single to round out the three run frame to begin the game.
  • UCCS responded with a Alec Gomez solo home run, Gomez's second of the year to cut the lead to two headed to the second.
  • In the third and fourth innings, the Eagles would continue to produce offensively, adding five runs off a pair of singles, a pair of doubles and a sac fly.
  • UCCS would get a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Aaron Jenkins RBI single to bring in Caleb Chance, but the effort would be matched in the top of the fifth when Josh Dykhoff hit the second long ball of the afternoon, also bringing in Goelz on the two run swing.
  • The Mountain Lions exploded offensively for seven runs in the home half of the fifth, bookended by a leadoff homer from Hayden Iverson, then punctuated by Iverson, again, who tripled in two runs to tie the contest at 10 runs a side.
  • Giefer claimed his second RBI double of the game in the sixth, but that would be the only Crookston run before UCCS added three in the bottom half of the inning. A two run double from Caleb Chance brought in Kit Wiggington and Alec Gomez, followed up by an Aaron Jenkins single to knock in Chance.
  • UCCS polished off their scoring with two more in the seventh, and Crookston would add a solo homer in the 9th to round out the scoring with a 15-12 final.

  • Facility | Location: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Errors opened the scoring in the nightcap action as a passed ball brought Evan Steinberger across to give the Mountain Lions the first inning lead. The mistake proved to be even more costly during the following at bat when Caleb Chance singled to center to knock in Kit Wiggington and Aaron Gomez who both moved up on the passed ball.
  • Mitch Goodwin's RBI double put the Golden Eagles on the board in the top of the 2nd brining in Sawyer Satrom from second.
  • The only action in the third inning was a monster shot from Kit Wiggington that cleared the hill behind the fence in right field to give UCCS a 4-1 lead.
  • Crookston and UCCS traded homers in the fourth inning, with Goodwin claiming two more RBIs on the two-run bomb, but Evan Steinberger's solo shot in the bottom half of the inning restored the UCCS lead to two.
  • UCCS grabbed another pair in the fifth inning on a two-run, one-out single from Ronan Hella ahead of a scoreless sixth inning for both teams. Crookston threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but a big strikeout from Matt Gonzales sewered the push.
  • Crookston grabbed two runs back in the seventh, but it was too little, too late. UCCS bounced back from their opening weekend sweep to open their home park with a double header sweep of their own, winning game two 7-5.
