Southeastern Oklahoma's Big Innings Burrow Baseball on Groundhog Day

DURANT, Okla. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team can't overcome key mistakes as Southeastern Oklahoma State University earns the sweep in the opening weekend series.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP – GAME 1
  • Final Score: UCCS 4, SE 5
  • Records: UCCS (0-2, 0-0 RMAC) | SE (2-0, 0-0 GAC)
  • Facility | Location: Mike Metheny Field | Durant, Okla.
  • All-Time Series: The Storm hold a 2-0 record vs the Mountain Lions all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game got off to a slow start, just like yesterday's competition. There was no scoring until the bottom half of the third frame when Southeastern Oklahoma had traffic on the base paths. With first and third as the situation, Yanluis Ortiz singled through the left side, scoring Damon Burroughs and giving the Savage Storm the early lead at 1-0. Kyler Carpenter on the hill for UCCS was able to clamp down and get out of the inning surrendering just the one run.
  • UCCS countered in their ensuing at bats, as Caleb Chance worked a lead off walk, then was brought around on a Alec Gomez double to deep center field, tying the game at a run a piece.
  • A fielding error by Alec Gomez early in the bottom of the fourth proved to be costly, as the Storm responded with two singles for two RBIs, with a wild pitch from Carpenter bringing around another run. At the end of the inning Southeastern held a 4-1 lead.
  • The Mountain Lions commanded the scoresheet the rest of the way, kicked off by Alec Gomez's first homer in a Mountain Lion uniform. The sixth inning solo shot was the only run of the inning.
  • A pair of errors brought Joe Plise around in the seventh, and Gomez' eighth inning groundout brought in Caleb Chance. Unfortunately, the Storm worked a clean three up, three down inning in the ninth inning, and UCCS fell short on their comeback 5-4.

GAME STATISTICS
  • Alec Gomez hit the first home run from the team this year.
  • Southeastern's defense struggled again today, with three errors after two yesterday.
  • Caleb Chance accounted for two of the Mountain Lions four runs.
  • Kyler Carpenter takes the loss for UCCS (0-1) and Brody Logsdon earns the win for Southeastern (1-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE INSIDE THE MATCH UP – GAME 2
  • Final Score: UCCS 4, SE 11
  • Records: UCCS (0-3, 0-0 RMAC) | SE (3-0, 0-0 GAC)
  • Facility | Location: Mike Metheny Field | Durant, Okla.
  • All-Time Series: The Storm hold a 3-0 record vs the Mountain Lions all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Savage Storm got off to a fast start this time around, with a two run shot from Cory Bonstrom, then a UCCS error led to four straight baserunners capped by a Brady Evans grand slam and a 6-0 Southeastern Oklahoma lead.
  • UCCS countered with four unanswered over the next four innings. Evan Steinberger got things started with an RBI single in the top of the second, followed by a Hayden Iverson sacrifice fly that same inning to bring in Steinberger. A flurry of singles in the top of the fourth saw Ronan Hella single home Aaron Jenkins, but that would be the only run for the Mountain Lions after a pitching change. Finally, Kit Wigington would single, and then he would come around on a Kasey Campbell single, cutting the lead to two at 6-4. The Mountain Lions would load the bases in the fifth, but fail to capitalize, stranding three.
  • Down the stretch, a pair of doubles from Southeastern's Wesley Mitchell and Cory Bonstrom would knock in three, collectively, with a Nick Hill single and a Cache Stone sac-fly tacking on the final two runs for the Savage Storm earning Southeastern the dominate 11-4 victory and opening weekend sweep.

GAME STATISTICS
  • Four errors in the game from the Mountain Lions proved to be critical, leading to five unearned runs.
  • Southeastern Oklahoma pitchers were efficient in the strike zone, issuing just one walk in seven innings.
  • Both staffs punched out six opposing batters in game two of the double header, with Joe McDermott fanning a high water mark of three.
  • Jason Fink takes the loss for UCCS (0-1) and Jackson Sioson earns the win for Southeastern (1-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • UCCS has not won a season opening series since 2021, when they swept a four game set at home vs Montana State Billings.
