All-Time Series: Saturday's matchup marked UCCS' first contest in program history against Texas A&M Kingsville.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Kailey Bond drew the start inside the circle for the Mountain Lions on Saturday morning against Texas A&M Kingsville and immediately found herself in a tricky situation with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the first inning after the first three batters in the Javelinas' lineup reached base safely. After one run came across the plate on a wild pitch from Bond, the second-year pitcher did well to keep the deficit at just one run, getting Lindsey Evans to pop up to shortstop before ending the inning with a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Kaylynne Ruiz.
- The Mountain Lions would draw the game even at one run in the visitor half of the second inning as freshman shortstop Laynee Case crushed a deep home run over the left field fence for her first long ball of the season.
- Bond pitched herself into trouble once again in the bottom of the second inning as she walked three of the first four hitters she faced in the frame to load the bases with one out. Similar to the first frame, Bond managed to find a way out of the situation without allowing any runs to score as she struck out Breana Carr for the second out before finishing the inning by inducing a ground ball out by Kayla Gonzales.
- UCCS flashed their power again in the top of the third inning with sophomore Izzy Giroux launching a 2-0 pitch up and over the left field wall to give the Mountain Lions a 2-1 advantage.
- The bottom of the third inning saw the Javelinas load the bases for a third consecutive frame, but this time Bond was unable to escape without any damage done. With two outs in the inning, Victoria Mosqueda slashed a single through the right side that brought home a pair of runs and put Texas A&M Kingsville ahead by a score of 3-2.
- Sophomore Caydee Farnworth took over for Bond inside the circle for UCCS in the bottom of the fourth inning and allowed hits to four of the first five batters she faced, which resulted in three runs scored for the Javelinas that pushed their advantage to 6-2. Texas A&M Kingsville continued to swing their bats in the bottom of the fifth inning, stringing together four hits, a pair of walks, and a hit batter to score four more runs and finish off a 10-2 run-rule victory.
STATS FROM THE GAME
- UCCS recorded four hits in their first game of the day, with Case, Giroux, Jennavieve Goldsworth, and Jacqueline Berkowitz each tallying one.
- Giroux and Case both notched their first home runs of the season to account for the Mountain Lions' two runs.
- Bond (0-1) saw plenty of traffic on the bases during her outing inside the circle as she allowed five hits and issued six walks across three innings pitched, however, she limited the damage to just three runs (two earned) on her pitching line. Farnworth tossed the final 1.2 innings of the ballgame, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Case put together a strong weekend in the Lone Star State, starting each of the team's three games at shortstop while going a combined 3-for-6 (.500 BA) with a home run, a walk, a stolen base, and two RBIs.
UP NEXT
- The Mountain Lions will open their home schedule on Thursday, Feb. 15 with a non-conference doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State University. First pitch for game one of the twin billing is set for 12 p.m. from Mountain Lion Field.
