Men’s Basketball Bested by No. 10 Colorado Mesa, 92-72

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team couldn't handle No. 10 Colorado Mesa University's hot shooting as they shot 61 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from three-point range in their 92-72 victory over the Mountain Lions.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
  • Final: UCCS 72, CMU 92
  • Records: UCCS (11-12, 7-10 RMAC) | CMU (19-3, 15-1 RMAC)
  • Facility | Location: Gallogly Events Center | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: This was the 55th matchup between UCCS and the Mavericks with Colorado Mesa now leading the all-time series 45-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UCCS opened Saturday night's contest against the No. 10 ranked Mavericks evenly after a pair of jumpers from Jesse Iweze and Jayden Washington made the score 5-5 at 16:37 mark in the first half. CMU would then begin to pull away, but the Mountain Lions kept things close after Mac Stodart went on his own 5-0 run to bring UCCS within two (15-13) with 12:21 to go in the half.
  • The Mavericks then got rolling and would go on a 24-9 run over the next eight and a half minutes to grow their lead to 39-22. Washington, Iweze, and James Ellis would cut their deficit to 11 (43-32) at the 1:55 point but CMU would eventually take a 51-37 lead going into the half.
  • The Mavericks continued their relentless attack in the paint to open the second half as they raised their lead to 19 points (60-41) in just under three minutes. Stodart and David Jabedo would lead UCCS on a 17-14 but would still find themselves down 74-58 with 10:06 remaining in the game.
  • CMU immediately responded on a 10-1 run in a two-and-a-half-minute span that would see themselves up 25 (84-59). In a last-ditch effort, the Mountain Lions would then score nine unanswered including baskets from Shareef Jaudon, Jabedo, and Xavier Martinez but the run would quickly be erased by the persistent Mavericks. CMU would go on to close the game and win 92-72.

GAME STATISTICS
  • The Mavericks could hardly miss tonight as they shot 61 percent from the field and 48.3 percent from beyond the arc. UCCS could not keep up with this hot shooting as they merely shot 46.4 percent from the field and only 27.3 percent from deep.
  • Despite the hot shooting, the Mountain Lions were still able to disrupt CMU in certain aspects as they forced 19 turnovers with 12 of them being steals. Martinez, Iweze, and Jabedo all recorded three take aways each.
  • Four different Mountain Lions reached double figures in tonight's contest with those being Washington (16), Stodart (12), Jabedo (12), and Iweze (10).
  • A radiant aspect of the Mavericks approach was their willingness to share the ball as they recorded 18 assists from nine different players compared to UCCS who only nabbed eight assists.
  • CMU had more points in the paint (42-38), fast break points (24-13), and points from the bench (39-35) but

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • CMU shooting 61 percent from the field is the highest percent that an opponent has shot against UCCS this year and their shooting of 48.3 percent from deep is the second highest three-point percentage the Mountain Lions have given up this season.
  • UCCS' last victory over Colorado Mesa came on Dec. 7, 2018.
