Big Flies Down Baseball on Opening Day in Oklahoma

DURANT, Okla. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs baseball team drops their first game of the season 10-1 at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Okla. Thursday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCH UP
  • Final Score: UCCS 1, SE 10
  • Records: UCCS (0-1, 0-0 RMAC) | SE (1-0, 0-0 GAC)
  • Facility | Location: Mike Metheny Field | Durant, Okla.
  • All-Time Series: Thursday's matinée was the first ever meeting between the Mountain Lions and Savage Storm.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a pitchers battle to begin the game, with the first nine batters being retired. That was changed, though, when Reid Rice turned on a pitch in the opening at bat of the Storm's half of the second inning, depositing it over the right-center field wall for a solo home run. The Storm would add another run seeing Wesley Mitchell come around on a Coby Grimsley RBI single before Vander Hodges worked out of the inning, stranding a baserunner and keeping the damage at just two runs.
  • In the third frame the Storm would go back to work with a lead off single from Damon Burroughs followed by Reid Rice's second big fly of the afternoon giving the home team a four-run advantage.
  • UCCS found the scoreboard in the fourth inning, with some help from two Southeastern errors, allowing Hayden Iverson to reach base, then steal second, and Caleb Chance to move him up to third. Alec Gomez then grounded into a fielder's choice, but got the job done having Iverson be the first to come across for the Mountain Lions. UCCS surrendered a run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the fourth to restore the Storm's lead to 4.
  • The scoring would cool off in the fifth, in the bottom of the sixth it was another longball hurting the Mountain Lions, this time off the bat of Coby Grimsley, knocking in Brady Evans and extending the lead to six.
  • Southeastern added another two run shot in the seventh inning, with Yanluis Ortiz taking Cole Philip deep and bringing in Cory Bonstrom.
  • John David Muse led off the home half of the eighth with a solo homer, notching the fifth ball to leave the yard for the Storm and bringing the lead up to nine at 10-1. The Mountain Lions would not be able to find the scoreboard, dropping the opening game of 2024 in Durant, Oklahoma.

  • The Savage Storm had five home runs to open the season, coming from four different players.
