HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A slow offensive start from both teams heated up halfway through the first quarter.  Forward Maison White made a layup to knot the game at 2-2 and then drew her second foul within a minute, sending her to the free throw line where she made one of two at the line to cut into CMU's early lead, 4-3.  The Mavericks Kylie Kravig drained a jumper as time expired on the shot clock before Amyah Moore Allen put two points in the scorebook.  With a 7-5 lead, the home team went on a 10-0 run that ended with Ellen Silva hitting a turnaround jumper in the paint and she added a free throw on the Mountain Lions' next trip down the court.  A jumper from Moore Allen was quickly followed by a Mavericks turnover that eventually led to Breelyn Robinson nailing a three-pointer to cap an 8-0 run to end the first stanza with CMU holding a 17-13 lead.
  • Colorado Mesa's Olivia Reed netted the first four points of the second quarter, but the Mountain Lions responded with an 8-0 spurt to knot the game at 21-all.  Amaya Snowden started the run with a bucket as Moore Allen added a three-point play before Breelyn Robinson capitalized off a CMU turnover and turned it into a three-pointer.  CMU pushed their lead back to seven points, 30-23, at the five-minute mark of the second quarter.  Again, the black and gold stormed and outscored the home team 12-2 in the final five minutes.  Gia Bradley started the comeback with a three-pointer as Moore Allen added four straight points.  Emily Vidal gave UCCS their first lead of the game when she sank a three-pointer from the right side with 1:03 left.  Ellie Reynolds closed the half hitting two free throws with five seconds left on the clock to give the black and gold a 35-32 lead at halftime.
  • On the Mountain Lions' second possession of the second half, Bradley hit a corner three-pointer shortly before Moore Allen stole the ball and went down the lane making a euro-step jumper to give UCCS a 40-32 lead.  CMU responded with a three-pointer, but Vidal copied CMU with her own three-pointer.  Reynolds grabbed a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast, giving the Mountain Lions their largest lead of the night, 47-35 (12 points).  The maroon and gold held their ground and used an 11-2 run to cut into UCCS" lead, 49-46, with two minutes left.  The Mountain Lions held their lead, 51-49 after three complete quarters.
  • The final stanza started with Reed tying the game at 51-51 just eight seconds into the quarter, but White scooped up an offensive rebound and put it back in for two.  CMU's Kylie Kravig put her team back on top, 56-53, but back-to-back treys from Moore Allen and Bradley swung the lead back in favor of UCCS, 59-56.  Moore Allen's three-pointer sparked a 13-0 run as she scored nine of the 13 points to seal the win for UCCS, 65-56.
