LAKEWOOD, Colo. – Coming off a come-from-behind match win at Chadron State College last night, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs dropped a four-set match at Colorado Christian University Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountain Lions and Cougars contended close with each other in the first half of the opening set with five scoring ties. Danielle Varela put down a kill to give UCCS their biggest lead of the set, 7-5, but a 7-2 run by the home team erased the Mountain Lions lead as they were unable to retake the lead again. UCCS fought back from a four-point deficit, 17-13, as Sydnee Walker sparked a 4-1 run with a kill before Mackenzie Ransom served two straight aces to bring UCCS within one point, 18-17. The Cougars closed out the set using five kills as part of a 7-2 run to end the set, 25-19.
- UCCS rebounded in the second set. Despite four scoring ties, the Mountain Lions never trailed CCU. Emily Pruitt broke a 10-10 tie with a kill followed by another kill from Payton Tompkins and two CCU errors to cap off a 4-0 run that gave UCCS a 14-10 lead. With a comfortable 21-13 lead for the black and gold, CCU surged back and came within one point of the Mountain Lions after an 8-1 run that saw UCCS commit five errors while the Cougars served up two aces. Holding on to a 22-21 lead, Tompkins put the set away with two straight kills and a block assist from Avery Ahlers to take set two, 25-21.
- Using momentum from the second set win, the Mountain Lions jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set behind a Tompkins kills and a block assist from Pruitt and Ahlers. CCU broke a 6-6 tie and used a 4-1 run to snag a 10-7 lead they would not relinquish. UCCS was able to get within two points of the home team, 18-16, but the Cougars kept the Mountain Lions at bay to win set three, 25-20.
- The fourth and final set was tightly contested as neither team held a lead larger than three points and the set featured 14 scoring ties and seven lead changes. With the set knotted at 21-all, the Mountain Lions called a timeout and a CCU service error gave the visiting team a 22-21 advantage. The Cougars regained the lead with back-to-back kills, forcing UCCS to call their second timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the set was tied for the 14th time after CCU committed an attacking error. The Cougars regrouped and used kills from Lilly Woods and Megan McNitt to end the set, 25-23, and take the match, 3-1.
MATCH STATISTICS
- Tompkins paced UCCS with 13 kills, nine digs, two aces and four block assists.
- Pruitt chipped in 10 kills as Walker recorded nine kills, 12 digs and a pair of assists.
- Rylee Pitts assisted on eight blocks as the Mountain Lions finished the set with 12 total blocks.
- Audrey Dowd accounted for 36 of UCCS' 43 set assists while Ransom dug up a team high 19 attacks and served two aces.
- The Mountain Lions hit .154 with 46 kills on 149 attempts.
- Woods led both teams with 19 kills and a staggering .679 hitting percentage as she was error less on 28 attempts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Mountain Lions have played 11 of their last 12 matches away from Gallogly Events Center, going 4-8 during the span.
- UCCS moves to 4-3 this season in four-set matches.
- Ahlers' 20 attempts at the net marked a new career high.
- Three Mountain Lions posted career highs in blocks, led by Pitts' eight blocks, Dowd's five blocks (one solo), and Tompkins four blocks.
- UCCS' 12 blocks tonight are the second most in a match this season.
- Tompkins' 48 attempts are the most by any Mountain Lion, while Pitts' eight blocks are the second most in a match.
