No. 14 UCCS Suffers First Loss of Season to No. 13 Rogers State, 2-1

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season against No. 13 Rogers State University Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Lions played with only ten players after having a red card issued in the 33rd minute.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
  • Final: #14 UCCS 1, #13 RSU 2
  • Records: UCCS (3-1-2, 0-0 RMAC) | RSU (3-1-2, 0-0 GAC)
  • Location: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • All-Time Series: This was the first matchup between the Mountain Lions and Hillcats with Rogers State taking the 1-0 advantage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Today's top-15 matchup began with Rogers State scoring on their first shot on goal as Matthew Sweetmen found Ruben Carrasco cutting toward the front right side of the goal, just getting it past Soren Russell as Cole Van Holland attempted to boot it out but was just too late. In result, the Hillcats commanded a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the match.
  • Most of RSU's attack came in the first 15 minutes applying pressure on the UCCS defense as they attempted three more shots and three corner kicks in that time after the early goal.
  • UCCS had a quick response as their attack applied their own pressure on the Hillcat defense. To this point, the game was physical, seeing many fouls called. The tipping point for the physicality came in the 33rd minute where Noah Espino-Kennedy was issued a red card meaning the Mountain Lions would play the remainder of the match a man down.
  • Right after the card in the 34th minute Kaydon Zamora-Reeves found himself with the ball on the left side of the field approaching the goal as he got past his defender and sent a strike with his right foot to the right inside of the net making the game 1-1. The score remained there going into the half.
  • Coming out of the break, the Mountain Lions continued to push the tempo on offense as they logged five consecutive shots in the first ten minutes but couldn't get one to go. In the 66th minute, Rogers State committed a foul in the box giving UCCS a penalty kick and an opportunity to grab the lead. Alex Andersson lined himself up and took the shot but just missed high and right leaving the score at a 1-1 tie.
  • RSU was back on the attack after the missed PK, as Hugo Martin found some free space about 20 yards out in the middle of the field, finding the back of the left lower part of the goal in the 74th minute putting the Hillcats up 2-1.
  • UCCS deployed all their efforts into tying it up in the last 15 minutes of play but were just unable to do so giving the Mountain Lions their first loss of the season.
GAME STATISTICS
  • Zamora-Reeves' goal in the 34th minute was his first goal of the season.
  • Andersson led UCCS in shots with seven while Lars Walczyk attempted four, Zamora-Reeves and Rory Scott each attempted two, and Matteo Moreno Madrid, Van Holland, Kolby Raineri, and Espino-Kennedy all attempted one shot.
  • UCCS outshot the Hillcats 21 to 14, but RSU held a 4-2 advantage on shots on goal.
  • The Mountain Lions utilized their bench this afternoon as Marvin Putu was the only Mountain Lion who played the full 90 minutes.
  • This chippy game saw Rogers State receiving three yellow cards and the Mountain Lions receiving two red cards.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • The goal for Zamora-Reeves was his first career goal coming in the midfielder's 47th game overall.
  • The Mountain Lions longest unbeaten start to the season ends today as they went five straight games without suffering a loss.
