HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Maison White got things started for UCCS on Monday night as she collected an offensive board and would go up strong with the ball as she put the Mountain Lions up 2-0. UCCS started on a 10-2 run in the first four minutes of the game as they controlled the lead early on, but Regis would finish the first quarter strong as they slowed down the Mountain Lions offense and pulled themselves up to only be down 14-10 heading into the second quarter.
  • UCCS came out the second quarter on a 6-0 run that was capped off by a Rylie Ottmann layup that would give the Mountain Lions their biggest lead of the night, up 20-11 with eight minutes to go before the half. Regis immediately stalled the UCCS offense over the remaining time in the second quarter and put up 15 points over the last seven minutes of the second stanza to take a 26-24 lead. With five seconds left on the clock, UCCS guard Krystina Hagood took the ball up the court from the inbound and threw up a near half court heave that banked off the glass and in to take back the lead at 27-26 heading into the break.
  • The Rangers came out to start the second half looking to take the lead for good as they went on an 11-7 run over the first six minutes of the third quarter to put themselves up 37-34. At the 3:33 mark of the third, White drove the ball through the lane as she was being double teamed and would find an open Ottmann on the baseline who then nailed a 15-foot jumper to try to slow down the Rangers momentum. Despite the effort, Regis would close the third quarter on a 12-4 run as Ranger guard Josey Ryan scored five of her 30 points tonight in this stretch, giving Regis a 49-40 lead going into the final frame.
  • Any time the Mountain Lions were able to generate a bucket in the fourth, Regis would respond right away as they gradually increased their lead as the clock kept ticking. The Rangers were up as much as 21 points with a little over three minutes left in the game. UCCS would cut this down over the last three minutes, but the effort was too little and too late as the Rangers secured the 71-55 victory.
