Mountain Lions Grab Fifth Straight Victory, Shutout Fort Lewis 3-0

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's soccer team grab their fifth straight victory continuing their hot streak with a 3-0 shutout over Fort Lewis College Sunday afternoon at Mountain Lion Stadium.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP

  • Records: UCCS (7-2-2, 5-0-0 RMAC) | FLC (5-1-5, 1-1-3 RMAC)
  • Location: Mountain Lion Stadium | Colorado Springs, Colo.  
  • All-Time Series: This was the 24th matchup between the Mountain Lions and Skyhawks with this being the seventh straight victory for UCCS against Fort Lewis, bringing their record to 9-15.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Sunday afternoon's match began in the Mountain Lions favor as in the 15th minute Emily Aguilar put herself in position to get in front of the Skyhawks goalkeeper who was attempting to clear the ball, blocking the kick and in result the ball rolled into the middle of the net putting UCCS up 1-0.
  • The Mountain Lions kept the pressure going throughout the remainder of the first half recording six straight shots after the early goal and dominating time of possession. Fort Lewis got their first shot of match in the 44th minute off a deep free kick. The shot was seemingly heading into the top right of the frame until Isabella Whitmore jumped with full extension knocking the ball up and over the goal keeping the Skyhawks from tying the game going into the break.
  • UCCS got the second half started with a penalty kick in the 46th minute after Taylynn Levi was dragged down in the goalkeeper area, earning a penalty opportunity for UCCS. Jade Kinsey came forward to take the penalty kick and sent a strike to the top left corner putting the Mountain Lions up 2-0.
  • The offensive dominance continued in the 52nd minute when Aguilar dribbled past a defender sending the ball to the middle of the field finding Makayla Merlo in stride as she put the ball to the back of the net giving the Mountain Lions a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • The rest of the match saw UCCS' defense lock the Skyhawks down. Fort Lewis was able to get seven shots up in the second half but couldn't cut into the Mountain Lion lead, giving UCCS the 3-0 victory.
 
GAME STATISTICS 
  • Aguilar's 15th minute goal was her fourth of the season and her 52nd minute assist was her first of the season.
  • Kinsey's goal in the 46th minute was her second on the year and Merlo's goal in the 52nd minute was her third.
  • UCCS outshot Fort Lewis 12-8 and had more shots on goal (8-3).
  • It was a full team effort in the match as 22 different Mountain Lions played minutes on Sunday.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE 
  • Today's victory makes it eight straight games without a loss for UCCS going 7-0-1 in that span.
  • This was the Mountain Lions seventh straight victory against the Skyhawks dating back September 29th, 2017.
  • Aguilar's fourth goal of the season now leads the team for 2023.

  • The Mountain Lions head to Spearfish, South Dakota for a match against Black Hills State University on Thursday, Oct. 12th. The action is set to begin at 6 p.m. at BHSU Ronnie Theisz Field.
